Jerry Engle claims he watched as three firefighters set a vacant house on fire in early 2008, in Riverdale Park, Maryland. According to Engle, he left an anonymous letter for the chief and president of the Riverdale Volunteer Fire Department alerting them to this serious problem. Engle says no actions were taken.

Jerry Engle, a long time volunteer firefighter at Riverdale and three other fire companies in Prince George’s County, told STATter911.com on Tuesday that he didn’t bring up the incident again until a little more than a month ago. That’s when Engle was accused of stealing equipment from the Riverdale firehouse and began providing information to fire investigators about the year-old arson.

Video of March 17, 2008 fire at 5413 Riverdale Road. The Bladensburg VFD website has pictures and more details of this fire, reported at 6:21 AM. There are also more pictures here. It appears the house also burned in the early morning hours of March 15, 2008 and possibly in the evening hours of March 16, 2007.

The house that burned used to sit on what is now a vacant lot at 5413 Riverdale Road. Engle believes the incident he witnessed occurred in March of 2008. There is a YouTube video from March 17, 2008 of a fire occurring at that house. According to area fire department websites the same house also burned two days earlier in the early morning hours of March 15, 2008 and possibly in the evening hours of March 16, 2007.

Engle claims the episode began when he drove the fire engine to check out a report of smoke in the area during the overnight hours. According to Engle, he waited inside the cab of the engine as the three other firefighters on board walked toward the home carrying road flares. Thinking that was odd, Engle says he followed the firefighters and saw them using the flares to ignite debris inside the house.

According to Engle, he drove the fire engine with the crew back to the Riverdale firehouse a few blocks away. Once there, Engle says two firefighters then left the fire station with a gasoline can. A short time later the call was dispatched for a house fire at 5413 Riverdale Road.

The Riverdale VFD website has details and pictures of what is apparently the March 17, 2008 fire that is similar to Engle’s account:

At about 0545 hours, a citizen heading to work called the station stating he smelled what seem to be mulch burning in the area of Tanglewood Drive and Riverdale Road. He added that he did not see any smoke or fire in the area. The station notified Public Safety Communications (PSC) and responded to the location with E807 staffed with 8 volunteers. After arriving in the area and finding nothing the crew returned to the station.

Picture from Riverdale VFD website.

As they were heading back to bed, PSC alerted the station for a reported house on fire at Kenilworth Avenue and Riverdale Road at 0621 hours. E807 went on scene at 5413 Riverdale Road with fire and heavy smoke coming from the 3 story vacant structure.

(Note: The Riverdale VFD website actually lists this fire as March 16, 2008, but two other sites show it as March 17.)

Jerry Engle contacted STATter911.com immediately after Monday’s raid at the Riverdale Volunteer Fire Department. Fire investigators served a search warrant looking for evidence of a possible arson ring involving firefighters. Engle says a warrant was also served at the Bowie area home where he is currently living.

Jerry Engle denies being involved in the Riverdale Road fire or setting any other fires, but admits investigators have questioned him extensively about the arsons. Engle wants the investigators to administer a polygraph examination to prove he is innocent.

Engle believes the investigators were already looking at the possibility firefighters were involved in a string of arsons when he provided the information about the Riverdale fire.

Sources indicate a handful of volunteer firefighters remain operationally suspended as the investigation continues. This includes three firefighters at Riverdale. One of the suspended Riverdale volunteers is also a career firefighter in Montgomery County.

Contacted about Engle’s allegations, Riverdale Volunteer Fire Department Chief Charles Ryan III, says the department stands by its previous statements that they are cooperating 100 percent with fire investigators.

Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department Chief Spokesman Mark Brady says the department can’t make any comments about the case because the search warrants served by investigators remain sealed.

In a previous statement issued by Brady, the department acknowledged investigators were looking at suspicious fires in six vacant homes, but made no mention of the possibility that firefighters were the suspects. The fire identified by Engle is not on that list.

Engle has long been a controversial figure in the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department. He wrote a book called Probie Days about Engle’s many years with the Kentland Volunteer Fire Department, one of the busiest volunteer fire companies in the world.

Last year, videos surfaced of Engle’s time at Kentland. It showed firefighters apparently hazing a new firefighter and shooting off illegal fireworks inside the station. Engle was seen using his body as a launching pad for a bottle rocket.

Engle drives a red Volkswagen adorned with numerous pieces of small fire equipment, including nozzles and axes. Many firefighters who have seen the vehicle have questioned how Engle got the equipment. Engle says none of the items were stolen, but they are surplus equipment he was allowed to take from the various stations where he was a volunteer.

Engle admits his departures from the volunteer fire departments at Kentland, Riverdale and Bladensburg each involved controversy. Engle was suspended from the Riverdale Heights Volunteer Fire Department in March following the accusations that he stole items while his company was transferred to the Riverdale station. Engle says the nozzle and nozzle bale he took were his own that he had left behind after parting ways with Riverdale VFD last year.

Engle say he was told by a top official in the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department that he is now permanently barred from being a firefighter in the county.

I completely understand and respect where you are coming from.

Firefighters accused of setting fires is a significant story that needs to be covered.

When the man who is responsible for at least part of this investigation being launched and who is a target himself of investigators wants to have his say, I feel obligated to provide that opportunity and believe it is a legitimate story.

I appreciate your comments and the nice way you made your point. I am hoping I will remain a "good reporter" in your eyes.

This guy is dumber than the days long. He said he didnt have anything to do with the fire. He just watched them walk in the house with road flares, then investigated by walking inside to witness the clowns lighting debris on fire. Then drives them back to the firehouse to then get dispatched back to the same adress for the house.
Standard procedure in this case is to slip a note to the Fire Chief of his suspicions and that clears him of being an accomplice or having anything to do with the arson. No Jerry it just confirms that you are not smarter than a 5th grader or 4th, 3rd.etc….

What a Tool Jerry is! He was run out of AA County Fire Department in the mid 80's, came to Kentland, got tossed out of there and became a station jumper when he wrote that book full of lies about Kentland. Doesn't he get it? He is not wanted nor welcome in P.G. anymore! Jerry do everyone a favor, go hide in a hole the rest of your life!

I don't have all the facts, and I am sad that any arson might involve firefighters (paid or volunteer).

Since Mr. Engle had decided to share his story with Dave, and since it was not given in a court of law, but as an open statement, I'll comment on that part.

If Mr. Engle truly did see fellow firefighters walking into a private residence with flares, and knew of their intentions to commit a crime, and took no actions to prevent them at that moment or in the future, I question his moral compass.

History is full or people who stood up and said, "No, not on my watch." It sounds as though Mr. Engle choose to remain silent until it benefited him to speak out. I tire of the people who constantly state, "I was just following orders".

I hope it turns out that as small a group of individuals is involved in this cloak of shame that is draped across the shield of the fire service in these times.

As for reporting the story, Dave, this story would get 30 seconds of airtime on the evening news, and maybe a few columns in the paper for two days. But here it is an evolving story. Keep reporting on the good, the bad, and the ugly. There are plenty of days when the good far outweighs the bad.

I have read Mr. Stter's reporting about Engle. I fully agree this is an eye opening experience for all VFD's to ensure this individual never has the opportunity to as the purpose of Fire and EMS Service represents Serve the Taxpayers. He obviously is reaching out for his own self serving interests. Engle said he has knowledge of an alledged Arson Ring involving Volunteer Firefighters. Why then didnot he report this to the PGFD Authorities
when he says he wrote an anonymous letter to Riverdale VFD? One can only think he may in fact be telling the truth here, however he waited until he was caught in the actof stealing Fire Dept. Equipment. He is an out an out Thief. By stealing the equipment he has shamed the Brother and Sister Firefighters he so says he has served proudly. Engle is looking for sometype of reduced charges within the Legal System. One would hope all the equipment he has mounted on his vehicle shown, is/was obtained Legally.
It is my hope that PGFD Authorites
will strip him of any PGFD Identification such as is shown him wearing a Tee Shirt and Cap. I would hope the good people at all his previous affiliations with VFD's completely disassociate him from any membership. If in fact the allegations of arson against these Volunteers is proven to be True, then in addition to whatever
the Lagal System finds with their guilt. This should be a wake up call to the Fire and EMS Service. If I remember correctly several months back a convicted arsonist/former Volunteer FF with PGFD was an Officer/memeber of I think it was Station 837. The PGFD Authorities including Volunteer Leaqderhip Authorities must ensure not another situation like this occurs. What is the most disgusting
thing about this entire mess is, Engle says he watched these Volunteers do the initial setting of those fires with Flares, carrying a Gas Can, and he stood by and did nothing. He said nothing up front. What would engle say now if when those Fires occurred, and Brothers and Sisters went inside, and what the most dreaded call "May DaY May Day. Possibly a wall, floor roof, ceiling collasped on these good Well Trained Firefighters. Each and everyone of those absolute shameful disgraceful misfits involved should be ashamed of their stupidity. They cannot/donot belong anywhere in or around a Fire and EMS Station. I am a Lifetime Volunteer Member in PGFD
and I detest Engle for his lack of Professionalism in immediately reporting this issue. The Good Well Trained Volunteer Firefighters
in PGFD will continue to provide the best possible Customer Service to the Taxpayers. This same effort applies to the Good well Trained Career Firefighters in PGFD. Togerther Career/Volunteer Firefighters will bring this dark shadow cloud away from PGFD.

If this doofus REALLY drove the arsonists to the scen of the crime, WATCHED them set the fires and then DROVE them back on an emergency call to extinguish this arson, then HE is an ACCESSORY to the crime! Even if he didn't set the fire he is just as much to blame as the ones wo set it! As a matter of fact, one of the prime things an arsonist or pyromaniac likes to do it RETURN TO THE SCENE OF THE CRIME and WATCH THINGS BURN!

Engle is a clear and present danger to the citizens of PG County, the members of PGFD and to society in general! He needs to be locked up where he won't hurt or kill anybody!

And YOU, Statter, need to STOP feeding this guy's twisted ego! YOU need to start "reporting" on some GOOD things on the fire service and STOP doing this tabloid muck-raking that you do! It serves NO good purpose except to feed YOUR ego! It does NOT benefit society AT ALL to publish this stuff! There are too many people out there doing GOOD things that go UNREPORTED (no 'ratings' points there) for you to be chasing ambulances and making celebrities out of mentally unstable people like Engle.

Satter, Don't stop your reporting as it is now. You have a balance between good stories; bad stories we can all learn from and possibly live from; and the bad stuff which if we all just continuesd to stick our head in the sand and hope it goes away but it won't so expose it and expedite its eventual ending. You guys who never want to hear the downside to the fire service, just sit there and look in the mirror and keep telling yourself how great you are and how much you appreciate yourself and how perfect you are, there now you feel better don't you.
If you don't appreciate Statter like the majority do, then go to your own website and post all the great things you do–should be about a 1 page site.

park your macho fireman ego at the door and admit the fire service is far from perfect. Exposing problems is the first step to fixing problems.

To the STATter911.com reader who wrote I should stop doing this tabloid muck raking that I do.

Go back a couple of paragraphs to your own words:

Engle is a clear and present danger to the citizens of PG County, the members of PGFD and to society in general! He needs to be locked up where he won't hurt or kill anybody!

The news shouldn't be reporting on someone like that?

We have allowed everyone to see just who that man is you are accusing of being such a danger and we are allowing people to make their own judgments.

I have nothing to back up your allegations about Jerry, but I do know that Jerry, is a target of this investigation (And so does Jerry) and also that he is one who provided information to investigators. I have verified all of this idependently of Jerry.

That to me is news when taken in the context of firefighters being suspended and a firehouse being raided as part of an investigation of a possible arson ring.

Yes, I will stick my neck out and say firefighters lighting fires does negate the good things those same firefighters have done.

You are absolutely right that there are some serious questions about Engle's role and why he didn't aggressively report the arson when it happened. Listen to my numerous questions to him about those very points.

I have known Jerry was talking since shortly after the incident where he was accused of stealing items from Riverdale. I didn't report anything because I wanted to be certain there was something more to this than Jerry's allegations.

On April 20 I was comfortable that this was very much a legitimate news story. The Washington Post and my competition soon made the same judgment.

We did our initial stories and then got back into it this week when Riverdale was raided. Is serving a search warrant at a firehouse for an arson investigation not a news story?

Jerry called me late Monday. I have had no way to contact him since he left 13. He told me his story and I determined that too was news. I stand by the decision. (For the record, I have turned down a number of previous interview offers from Jerry.)

For me to turn down an interview with a central figure in a significant story like this would be like you saying, no I don't think I will go on that working fire.

That said, I will be as happy as anyone when this story moves to a resolution one way or the other. Need some sleep.

I do appreciate you reading the blog and thank you for sharing your opinion.

Remember, folks, these are just allegations. And Jerry is not the most credible witness. He may just be saying these things in an effort to get out of trouble for 'stealing' the items from Co#13. If the whole thing was a lie or even if the guys from #13 are eventually found innocent (or there is insufficient evidence to proceed) they, nonetheless, will have had to muddle through this whole ordeal which will have a lasting effect on their futures. People will look at them, and their department, in a different light. Even when falsely accused and later vindicated, the shadow will still remain. And the one guy who works for Montgomery Co. has probably been operationally suspended pending the outcome of the criminal investigation. What a mess!!

For all of our sakes, I hope that this is nothing more than one of Jerry's lies and that the guys from #13 are innocent. And, if it is later proved to be a lie, then Jerry should be held accountable through both the criminal system and the civil system.

This moron "Stroker" Jerry Engle is a disgrace to all firefighters. He and his arsonist cronies in the PGFD are the reason why a significant part of the public view firefighters (particularly volunteer firefighters) in low regard. I don't live in that county, but I would imagine there is a large part of the population that now look at their volunteer firefighters as immoral, out-of-control, pyromaniacs that drive around setting fires to stroke their own egos. His excuse that he just witnessed the arson, but didn't physically take part in it, is a joke and shows how dumb he really is.

Just the car this idiot is driving around in is an embarrassment to the fire service. I cringe whenever I see some "stroker mobile" for fear that everyone that sees it, now views all firefighters as idiots, who need to announce to the world that they are a "hero".

The fact that companies continue to accept him with the amount of times he has been thrown out of other companies is another indication of what is wrong in our industry.

I don't blame Stater, or any other journalist for covering this story. Criminals like this deserve to be exposed. It is just a shame that countless other firefighters (career and volunteer alike) get stained by the actions of a few. True heroes do their job without the need for public attention. This fact seems to be lost in the PGFD. My sympathies to those PGFD members that don't deserve this abuse.

All I had to do for this story was pick up the phone and make a decision it was newsworthy.

There was no pay and we didn't even buy him lunch.

My only characterization of Jerry has been that he is controversial. Beyond that I have let everyone else make their own judgments of what he is or isn't.

For good or for bad, I imagine that everyone had a pretty good idea who Jerry Engle was after his long stint at Kentland.

But if Jerry Engle is everything you and others have said he is, why did four different volunteer fire departments in Prince George's County allow him to respond on emergency calls? Why was he in the system for so long?

Would you agree that the person you and others described shouldn't have been in the fire service?

Is that in itself not a news story?

I do not blame Statter… Its news. Just like the people being suspended was news. I am glad people got to see this interview. I wish the general public could see the raw footage of the interview. Statter kept it real, and did a mini interrogation. It allowed him (freak show Jerry) to paint his future and make the hole he was getting into a lot bigger. Personally, after watching it, it put my mind at ease and I just want to say SET MY BROTHERS FREE AND LOCK THE CLOWN UP!

So let me get this right, this clown says he's not guilty of anything because all he did was drive the getaway car(er..pumper..whatever)Is this guy for real? My God how did this guy ever…ever get through the doors of a fire house? This guy was a PGFD firefighter? How in the world have you all kept the public from the doors of the fire stations with their torches and pitchforks with this kind of stuff going on? Humm..think I will try and talk some of my buddies into robing a bank and tell them all I want to do is drive the getaway car…just incase we get caught…then iam not involved…right?

Could you send Jerry to DC. We need to open a couple can of worms here.

I think Dave did every fire department in the free world a favor by exposing this jerk. His picture should be posted everywhere so that NO other department allows him to do his destuctive damage any longer.

Jerry…do the world a favor and jump off a cliff !

Dave, Jerry has been allowed to remain a volunteer in PG County because "one man's trash is another's treasure". Simply put, there are very few volunteer companies that will turn away anyone that want's to ride the apparatus because that helps them to be able to justify their existence. If you did some checking, I am sure you would find that there are volunteer members out there right now with questionable character. Prince Georges County does not really care, they figure they can get some free fire protection and only if something comes back to bite them on the ass will they take action.

After looking at the video of the Clown Car, I wonder why Riverdale Heights VFD hasn't filed a police theft report for the equipment stolen from THEM? The Seagrave emblems and other equipment are absolutely from their antique Seagrave pumper that they are in the process of restoring. Those items cannot be replaced as they are no longer made! They also don't come on any of the newer Seagrave apparatus. Especially the nose emblem that he has on the car. I also wonder how the State of Maryland allows him to have red lights on a non-emergency vehicle, especially since that is NOT the way that vehicle was originally manufactured. Not to mention that it doesn't have any headlights, so it is not legally roadworthy and thus cannot even have a license plate on it…even a "historic" plate. He probably mooched/stole the plate! Maybe some of the police officers that read this should scope out that plate number and read it!

And I agree with the others. Statter should stop giving a free forum to this wack-job! This is like the Jerry Springer show! Freaks and crazies out there just for the shock value and the publicity. It is not doing anyone a bit of good to "cover this story". It is only "news" in the sense that it is weird.

PLEASE, for the love of all that is holy, KEEP D.C. OUT OF THIS WHOLE CONVERSATION. PGFD can keep their IDIOT to themselves. We have enough sh-tuff to worry about on our own, without having to be mentioned in the same breath as that clown.

At first I was disappointed that a fellow Montgomery County Career firefighter was taken off the floor for suspicion of arson. Now after taking all this stuff in I am shocked that the white shirts are evening considering what this loser is saying to be true.
Maybe there are times when waterboarding is appropriate!

Well, Statter, it sure is going to be interesting when you have to go to court and testify because of your involvement with this screwball! I'm sure those video tapes are going to make NICE exhibits for the prosecution! Sure would love to see THOSE courtroom videos!

Oh! This just keeps getting better and better! I'm sure that ATF and the Fire Investigators are having a ball!

I wonder how your employer feels about all of this headline news coverage?

You can see those videos now they are online.

I have done this for a long time and I have yet to have to testify. Not to say it wouldn't happen. And just what is it I should fear from that?

"I wonder how your employer feels about all of this headline news coverage?"

I haven't asked my employer how they feel, but is "headline news coverage" something bad for those in who work as reporters or their employers. Not sure of your point. Feel free to explain.

Thanks for reading the blog and taking the time to write your thoughts. Please respond so I can better understand your concerns.

    Dave,

My question to you is why don't post all the comments that are left for you. I know I have left two and I have yet to see either one of them posted on here. I was even being nice and answered a few questions for people.
