Fireman’s Fund – Supporting Safer Communities: A National Firefighter Survey

National survey results

Washington, DC regional survey results

At 11:00 this morning Chuck Kavitsky, chairman of Fireman’s Fund, will join DC Fire & EMS Chief Dennis Rubin at Engine 3 on Capitol Hill to discuss results of what is being called one of the largest surveys of the American fire service. Fireman’s Fund says nearly a third of all departments took part in the survey done by the market research firm Ipsos Public Affairs.

Fireman’s Fund has the details from Supporting Safer Communities: A National Firefighter Survey on its website. The survey confirmed the negative impact of the economy on fire department’s across the country. It found the top challenges facing departments are lack of budget; staffing, recruiting and retaining qualified firefighters; old or outdated equipment, gear and apparatus.

On its website Fireman’s Fund has the national results along with regional findings from Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New Jersey, New York, Phoenix, Seattle and Washington, DC.

The fire service in this country is failing fast! Stations closing, apparatus falling apart and killing firefighters, people dying in fires because of delayed responses or not enough manpower due to "budget restrictions", absentee fire chiefs who spend more time on the lecture circuit than administering to their departments, fire apparatus being given to resorts when the cities that need them don't have enough, corrupt unions making outrageous demands on fiscally strapped cities, chiefs outnumbering firefighters on fire scenes, it's al ridiculous and we are all going to pay a horrible price.

But the governemtn will make it all right.

Well it's good to see that the IAFF was able to get an increase in the SAFER grants. Oh yes, and what labor organization will all those new firefighters join? Right!! Way to go union bosses feathering your own nest at the expense of the rest of us who give freely of our time and have chicken barBques to put boots on our firefighters. And yes I was a dedicated IAFF member for 30 years. I appreciate what they have done for me, but I also see them building thier own dynasty with the help of thier liberal political friends. Paybacks are wonderful right Harold???

And I guess you didn't turn down any of the pay raises or benefits that the Union gained for you? You hypocrite!

Sounds like you're jealous because you can't get hired. Is it their fault if the County wants to pay them well. More power to them.

Even the paid departments are suffering. I think that if you look at the results as I did you will see that the entire fire service is having issues. Not just volunteer. To put blame will not help solve the problem. We need to work together to make things right.
