NOTE: The video above was removed from YouTube Monday afternoon about 16 hours after we first embedded it. The copy above is from thebravestonline.com FirefighterSpot.com.

This is all that was written with this video posted earlier today: “Got some campers donated, so we burned ‘em up”. The video is titled, Live Fire Training, Woofin’ Camper Fire. Watch for the application of PPV, via a lea blower near the back of the camper.

Please tell me the vehicles were de-fueled and the various tanks pulled. But then again………………leaf blower / RV, FF’s at grave risk…..probably not.

Dave, first, you operate an outstanding site for us and i thank you.
I can no longer hold my comments.
I live and teach in PA, work for a METRO FD this is nearly the worst display of the fire service ever. Many of the ff’s in this county are ok. We see the ones that should go sell shoes with Al Bundy. I am tired of paying my taxes for a bunch of jackass’s to act in this manner. The worthless state fire adm office just keeps handing out 2% loans of my $ for parade app. When the loosers could not lead a pack of ants to a picnic. The local leaders/state leaders need to STOP giving out MY MONEY to these half a** compamies. This is not a game, joke–i was injured 8 months ago searching for a person trapped in a dwelling, still not 100%. So this type of action, lack of common sense just puts me over the edge. WHY,I want the folks in the clip to respond to our comments. What the he** were you thinking. YOU WERE NOT! All of the officers should resign today. You managers, you are certainly not LEADERS come on this site, state your PRO-BOARD CERTS show us how poor you really are. Dave thank you for this time to speak my mind. See you next year in EMMITSBURGH at the ACADEMY in October. QUESTION–What about the ones who get hurt and never recover to full duty/life. god bless

Thats almost as pointless as doing interior attack on a car fire. No victims to rescue = no life safe risk. I am so glad that the more gullible members learn from this lesson. Someone could have gotten fried in an unnecessary flash here. No right way to train on a camper fire….

  7. Why should it suppose us! says

Just in case, sounds like you needed to get something off your chest! Ha brother I can agree more with you. The fire commissioner of this great commonwealth needs to put a stop this crap. But as in the past because no one got hurt or died, we will not do anything to change this stupid stuff and it will keep going on. If we only followed the example of the other sates around us and set training standards not for firefighter, but for officer too this stuff might stop. But remember you can fix stupid!!! Run Foster run!!!!

Example of “Lack of Common Sense”! Cannot believe that this was the only opportunity for this department for a “training burn”, more like “look what NOT to do”!

Luckily no one appears to have been injured, but what about “next time”?

  9. FIRERESQ345 says

I also have to question the interior attack on a motor home. You take a house, and put it on top of a car, this is a motor vehicle fire. What about attacking diagonally to stay out of the path of exploding tires and everything else pounded into our memory in BASIC firegfighter academy? I guess inside is safer, it also had a custom ventilation unit, these guys must just be advanced.

Criminal. Absolutely criminal. An Assistant Chief in Lairdsville, NY did JAIL TIME for less stupid actions. I wonder if the bought any of that PPE, the SCBA’s, or the leaf blower with an AFG grant???

  11. local guy says

Please do not judge Cumberland County and the Mechanicsburg area on the ignorant and unsafe acts of the Silver Spring Volunteer Fire Company. Go in any direction and you can find well trained and knowledgeable firefighters and officers. This is absolutely a disgrace to the fire service. Stupid acts like this are the reason that we kill firemen each year. I have to say that you can’t teach stupid.

  12. Capt. Ken says

NFPA 1403 anyone? Maybe they were trying to demonstrate what can happen when forced ventilation techniques are incorrectly applied?Depending on your religous views; God was gracious or they were lucky.

Just when I think we can’t stoop any lower or get any dumber, I am proven wrong. These people give stupid people a bad name. These few bring the entire service down with these antics. I would hope that if they have any kind of certifications that they are pulled and they are dismissed from the service.

  15. CountyInstructor2 says

Are you kidding me? Ok, I seriously thought this was a joke, but obviously it is not. Very sad! What the hell are these guys thinking? Who burned all their copies of NFPA 1403? Better still, where are their copies of ‘Common Sense for Stupid Firefighters’? Have they ever heard of Parsippany, NJ, Baltimore, Md, Greenwood, DE? Can anyone who reads be so stupid as to do this. These are the guys that I want to see on stage at FDIC. (With no respect) Forget getting Goldfedder up there, forget Norman or Brunacini, I want these guys, with their video to explain how this has any worth, how this is safe, or how this makes them better “firefighters”, and explain how this is not criminal. We have a hard enough time keeping firefighters alive every single day. Actions like these are a slap in the face to everyone who does what they can to keep us safe and works to prevent injuries and fatalities, and to everone who play the game by the rules! Get these idiots out of the fire service.

  16. Justin Case says

Now that we have beat these guys up,lets make this into a positive outcome. Because some may not have a voice in the area to try to change operations.
Why not have Cumberland County hold a FF/OFFICERS SAFETY and OPERATIONS DAY in the VERY near furure. The Cumberland County Political leaders could be in attendance to lend support to the correct way of doing business, since they use my tax money. They do foot some of the bills for the FD and the County owned Training site. I am sure many of the CERTIFIED training instructors in the area would lend a hand.
Back to the cost of doing business this way. The local boros/townships pay for some if not all of the workers comp. for the FF in their areas. I submit to you how long would it take for the boro dump truck operator to do something stupid and get a way with it. My point is this, why is good money being thrown away to some of the local fd’s without folks being held accountable. OSHA/INS. COMPANIES/THE LEGAL system do not care if you and paid or volly. The more clains we have the higher the cost of doing day to day business is.
Lets start the year out right,no more leaders without PRO-Board CERT./FF without the same and a healthy dose of good common sense. Hold the training day in Jan. 2010.
Perhaps Dave Statter and the PA Fire Commish.could both be keynote speakers.

PS This is not the only county in P-Tucky that acts like this look at “THE WATCH DESK”.com to get a laugh—Westmorland and ALLEGHANY Counties. have some good ones going on right now

  18. Why should it surprise us! says

I know that in most area of the country the vol. fire servie is on life support. Be if we do not stop stuipid stuff like what we see in this video. We all be gone before we know it. We need to have someone in this commonwelth tech 2 things fire the service. You will take notice that I said frie service (career & volunteer). Common sense & leadership. Leadership is the most important, because this will set the example of how firefighter will act and train. Because f/f’s will all follow the example the is set. When have chiefs are not wearing all the PPE (SCBA) what example does that set for the mushrooms that are following? Always lead by example!!

  19. Firechick says

The only brilliance I can see from this video is it teaches those of us who KNOW better that (at least in Canada, under the Occupational Health & Safety Act–that applies even to volunteer ff’s) is we have the “RIGHT to Refuse Unsafe Work”…ANYTIME, even during training! Volunteer of career.

I wholeheartedly agree WHY would you go IN?! DUHHHHHHHHHHH

This shouldn’t be on “TheBravestOnline” it should be re posted to “theDUMBESTonline”

  21. Concerned Officer says

I run with a company that is fairly close to where this company is located and I’m also a line officer. My guys get a lot of flack for doing minor things wrong, which is a shame because most of the time they are just trying to do things safely or just aren’t confident in doing truck work when riding on the engine.

What will probably happen here is that in a few weeks time, everyone will have forgotten about this incident. Will other municipalities remove them from their box cards? It’ll be discussed and words will be thrown around, but no, it won’t happen.

I know that this will be used as a training topic in my company about what not to do. We will LEARN from it. Sadly, a lot of other local companies surrounding them will not. It’s hard to fight fire in 2009 with the mentality of 1979, folks.

Please, everyone take the opportunity, whether you’re with the company involved or not, to learn from this. Scrutinize the video to point out what they did wrong, and discuss it with your younger members. Some of them might see this as a “fun” exercise, too, and it’s up to ALL OF US to make sure that they all understand that this was a poorly executed exercise. Don’t just watch the video to make fun of them and call them names, because you don’t accomplish a damn thing by doing that.

Good luck to all and may we all return safe!

And fire departments wonder why it is so hard to do live burns anymore because of stupidity like this. Please don’t let this one department in Cumberland County represent the rest.

This video recently got played for a group in fire class here at home. The older guys and officers lost the color in their face, while the younger guys laughed like hell. Nothing funny in that video from my seat. Good luck to everyone who did not laugh. Such actions are a sickness that plague not only the fire service, but the world in general. We laugh at the idea of; “can’t fix stupid.” Well I sure hope we can teach common sense.

Past Chief you are wrong! Alan Baird the third KILLED A FIREFIGHTER DURING TRAINING. That is far worse than what these yayhoos did. However, this is totally assinine. Learn from this and do not make the same mistakes. Take training seriously.
