This is all that was written with this video posted earlier today: “Got some campers donated, so we burned ‘em up”. The video is titled, Live Fire Training, Woofin’ Camper Fire. Watch for the application of PPV, via a lea blower near the back of the camper.

That is the kinda crazy “training” that gets people killed. You wouldn’t go inside that thing on a REAL fire, why now?

I struggle to see what objectives they were attempting to achieve, other than an innovative, yet inappropriate use of a leaf blower.

    Stay safe. Train often.

On my way home from work Saturday morning, I passed them burning at the Cumberland County training facility. I am glad we don’t have to lower our flags to half mast because of this reckless behavior. From what I understand (from a reliable source) the chief of the department stated they were NOT going to put anyone inside the campers. Well, at 30 to 33 seconds, that camper almost became someones death trap. When will we (the fire service) learn?

If that were my fire department and they did something that foolish, stupid and dangerous, EVERYONE who participated would be dismissed from the department.
Yeah, I know; that would put a big dent in the department’s roster, right?
Well, I guess we will just have to combine with another department 5 miles away, but NO ONE is going to be crispy fried on my watch.
The activities on display in that video are some of the most reckless and ignorant that I have seen in 30 years in the fire service. The only thing it proves is that they are idiots.

The two chiefs looking on and overseeing the reckless behavior are incompetent to lead any fire department. Maybe the board of trustees should take a closer look at who is running this department. Instead of winning prizes for the best polished apparatus they should focus on being professionals who are competent to be in the fire service

In my home state, we have dedicated facilities for people like this. It is known as Central State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. The second floor would house the guys that did what they were told, as they are not quite as Insane as those reserved for the third floor. This is the area reserved for the ones that INTENTIONALLY hurt and kill people. The incident commander (if they had one) or who ever came up with this and approved it would definitely reside on floor 3. Makes one wonder if they have ever heard of NFPA 1403, much less READ it!!!

    From their website:
05/27/09-Vehicle Fire Training- Finally we get to see a little fire in training! Chief 1 secured us a night at the Cumberland County Training Site, two vehicles and a pile of pallets. Tactics were discussed and implemented, a good time was had by all, and everyone returned home safely. No small feat, given the various explosions coming from the vehicles. Both struts in the rear hatch failed quite dramatically, and clearly there was something made of magnesium in the front. Several magnesium explosions were seen that night, one of which was captured in a photo below. You can clearly see the shower of white sparks following the explosion. One attaboy to Firefighter Kyle for being first off the rig packed up and attacking Chief 1′s little surprise for crews arriving to the training grounds. Seems one of the vehicles caught fire a little early.

EXCELLENT BOYS, EXCELLENT… It’s only time before they kill someone.

Jesus Christ! It was a TRAINING scenario and they left struts in a vehicle when they had a chance to take them out??? And then BRAG about how they survived it???

Truly a bunch of clowns. I fear for safety of the people in that coverage area.

Doesn’t Pennsylvania have one of the top LODD statistics in the country? Training is to learn not to be held as a way to “see a little fire” through dangerous training practices. We want respect from our fellow firefighters and community but by blatantly ignoring safe practices we are eroding that respect. Who wants to inform a family that a training burn in an RV or a strut explosion killed their love one? This is not considered ‘Heroic’ and the wall in Emmitsburg is not meant for this type of LODD.

I have had the pleasure of attending some excellent training programs in Bucks County, PA including Pro Board FF1, FF2, Fire Instructor and Fire Officer classes. I can tell you all, please do not judge the entire State of PA on the actions of these clowns 100 miles to their west in Mechanicsburg. The individuals who were in charge of this “training” calamity should be ashamed of themselves. It is appalling to me that these type of events continue to happen even after all of the brothers who have been killed participating in such buffoonery. When are we going to stop allowing uneducated, unqualified training officers and company officers to be placed in positions of authority?

What kind of “over sight” does that department or that county training center have? There has to be some way that protective measures are in place so events like this never happen again. I guess accountability is just a word in the dictionary to them.

C’mon! Put the video back up, guys!!!!! Don’t be embarrassed! Looks like Silver Springs already subscribe to that theory but they don’t like getting caught!!!! If you think it is a dumb thing to do, it probably is… If you don’t know better, go back to bagging groceries!

While it’s easy to sit back and cast stones (with good reason and the best intentions), these folks are still brothers. Witnessing such a disregard for safety indicates a serious lack of education on the part of this department, and should concern us (the fire service)for their overall safety.

We all know of departments or firefighters that fit a profile similar to the one in question. Instead of targeting such people and events as whipping posts, target them as opportunities to share knowledge that will keep them safe.

Anonymous had some points to all of his comments thus far. Too bad they were some of the most idiotic points I ever heard. I was not at this training, but I do know about it. During my time in the military we TRAINED AS WE FOUGHT. Are you telling me that you train exactly as you fight real fires? If that’s the case, that must be why you are with the 2nd best fire department in the township. As for the reason your company is on their boxes, it’s only because one of your members is married to someone on the township board. If that wasn’t the case, your department would have been shut down long ago.

well… that was a video. Disregaurd the trainees and fire fighters. This was a leadership mistake. How do yo en-rage a fire morewith a leaf blower and have you brothers standing by your side confused and wondering what to do. Work smarter not harder boys ^_^ They said that a plan was implemented how in the he** do you make a plan of attack before you see the scene and expect it to work unless this chief and captain are experts in R/V fires they should not be doing this kind of training. And was there any fuels in this vehicle. By the way this video looked it seemed like they recieved this vehicle and set it on fire generator was still intact. yes that is how it would be when you roll up on a scene but was this even cleared. And both struts were intact damn good thing no one was standing in front of either one of the bumpers when they gave way. People dont kill ppl fellow brothers stupidity kills people.

When are you going to use a leaf blower on an R/V fire. Come on boys why why why? if its not burning the way you want it to why would you make the enviroment of the fire worse. People learn from mistakes i hope you do. When are you going to see an R/V burn like that unless you are in hurrcane type winds and if you didnt put the dam leaf blower in there the kid would have put out the fire in short order. Another thing contain the scene from further exposure and work smarter unless you have a confermation the you have victims inside. why would the man in charge want to make this thing burn more. Beacasue he can beacause he is the chief because his EEEGGGOOO!!! is to big for his white helmet WTF man teach your boy’s they are you brothers they are your sons and they are you friends they will learn from wisdom they will learn from your word because they respect you and what you have done they trust you and that is why you should never put them in harms way unless you have to yes i know it is training yes i know they “WE” need it but for god sakes dont kill them before they can help someone.

After 45 years in the fire service I have seen many stupid things on and off the fireground. This “training” video goes right to the top of ignorance chart. No wonder volunteer fire depts. get such a bad name. Sorry guys, but it is true! Most try very hard to be professional, but these fools, wherever they are from, scream anateur and dangerous to themselves and the public.
The idiot with the leaf blower should have the crap beat out of him. Forcing air into a open fire with firefighters inside. I guess that one guys smoking helmet looks cool.
Whoever was in charge should be fired.
The entire fire dept. needs to reevaluate their purpose for existence. Obviously safety isn’t included in their program.

First off WTF!!. The Chief that is standing there is a Harrisburg City FireFighter! So that does not say much for them either that they employ idiots like him! Second they should be banned from using the training center grounds! Third the last time i checked in order to do live fire training you had to follow NFPA 1403 So you have to have qualified instructors there. Fourth whoever put the comment about New Kingston Fire Company being the real fire company. I know most of those guys to and belive me its not much of a step up. Lets face it you are sister companies and do everything together and the same.
