Officials said the blast occurred after a fire broke out about 10:30 a.m. in a car that a mechanic was working on at the Exxon station on 132 Millburn Ave. The mechanic suffered burns and was taken by ambulance to St. Barnabus Hospital in Livingston.

Fire officials responded to the scene and had the blaze contained a short time later.

Witnesses reported hearing five explosions. About two-thirds of the roof of the building collapsed, almost appearing as if much of it had melted in the flames.

It’s not yet known what caused the fire to start and remains under investigation.

The condition of the mechanic is not yet known. No one else was injured in the blast.
