From the AP:

A firefighter from Topeka is one of 10 U.S. Baptists being held in the Haitian capital Sunday after trying to take 33 children out of Haiti.

The church members said they were trying to rescue abandoned and traumatized children. But officials said they lacked the proper documents.

One of those detained is Drew Culberth. The 34-year-old father of four from Topeka is a firefighter and assistant youth pastor at Bethel Baptist Church.

Friend Joel Culberson says a relative who leads a church in Iowa had asked Culberth to go on the trip.

News of what had happened had everybody worried, and the congregation prayed for him during services Sunday.

Culberth has concerns, but he says he knows “God is in control of the situation.”

If the U.S. had a horrible catastophe and other countries swooped in and trafficked our children to foreign lands under the guise of adoption, we’d be outraged. Yet we’re not as outraged by this as we should be. I’m sorry that this religious group felt it was best to steal children off of the streets to adopt them out to strangers in a strange land, instead of joining the efforts to help them reunite with their original and rightful families. I’m sorry that they have such a superior view of their own belief system and way of life that they are unable to see the equal personhood of the Haitian people and as a result, stooped to this level without so much as a thought toward their families and culture.

Indeed, God is in control of the situation. I suspect that’s why they were caught. Thank God.

I hope this incident causes people to put adoption and its 3 billion dollar per year industry under a microscope.

Well the Gov. of Pennsylvania did it a few weeks ago with 8 or 10 kids, why can’t the rest of the people?

So there were no cops around to help keep order after the quake, the entire country seems completely unable to function at all without outside help, but there are cops around to see to it that these Americans are detained for trying to help those most in need of it.

AJ you are correct if people from a foerign land came in and started stealing our children in the midst of a disaster we would be outraged, and we should be. We have untold children right here in this country who are in need of families to love and care for them. I feel terrible for the people of Haiti but helps starts at home. It’s just not as good a publicity stunt saying you are helping some starving child from some child services bureau within our own borders.

Amen joe bob. The entire thing is ridiculous. It’s about time this country focuses on this country’s problems for a change. As you stated there are plenty of kids right here waiting and hoping for a family…but get to sit there and watch all of these foreigners being brought in and given to families they could have gone to. What a crock.
