UPDATED – DC Metro Derailment: Three minor injuries at Red Line's Farragut North Station.

DC Farragut MetroAs if there aren’t enough transportation challenges in the Washington area already after two back-to-back blizzards, word now comes of a subway derailment. Here’s what WUSA9.com has so far:

There has been a derailment of a six-car train near the Farragut North station in Northwest.

DC Fire and EMS Chief Dennis Rubin says one person has been transported to the hospital with an injury, but there were a total of three minor injuries out of the 345 people that were on the train. The other two injuries are bumps and bruises according to Rubin. They are all off of the train and in one of the nearby stations. He says all of the passengers are now looking for alternative transportation to get to where they needed to go.

The Red Line has reopened.

Metro officials are investigating the incident which occurred at 10:13a.m.

AP spoke to 51-year-old passenger Wendy Bogart of Washington. She says as they arrived at the station the lights and fan went off, but the train operator said “Don’t panic… We have to re-energize the third rail.” She says she felt nothing.

A preliminary report from Metro says a front wheel of the lead car came off the tracks.

Metro will be single-tracking trains on the red line, but Farragut North station will remain closed. Metro’s website says they will have a shuttle service operating between Dupont Circle and Gallery Place.

Drivers should avoid the area of Connecticut Avenue and K Street, Northwest. Connecticut Avenue is closed from K Street to L Street NW, 17th Street, NW is closed between I and K Streets east and west of the park, and 17th Street is closed between K and L Streets. K Street has reopened.
