A Brooklyn Heights police officer is recovering from his injuries after being struck by a vehicle during a traffic stop Saturday.
Lt. John Lambert responded to a one-vehicle traffic accident at 4:51 p.m. Saturday on the State Route 176 southbound and I-480 eastbound, near the Tuxedo Avenue overpass.
While he assisted the driver who spun out into traffic due to icy road conditions, another vehicle lost control and hit him.
Lt. Lambert was struck and thrown over the guardrail while trying to prevent the 18-year-old driver from being hit by the oncoming vehicle, police said.
Police say Lt. Lambert lost consciousness for four minutes, and was taken to MetroHealth Medical center.
He is currently in fair condition with multiple fractures.
Lt. Lambert has worked on the police force for 22 years.

It’s too bad the fire appartus had been moved and all the firefighters were in hand cuffs! This is what cops need to see to understand why we do what we do on the highway.
that was my dad that got hit. i love him very much and my whole family is glad hes still with us. i know this is unfortunate but it could of been a million times worse. im really proud of my dad for putting that other man first. he is a great guy, friend, police officer, and dad! i love him and know its going to take time for him to recover but my family will do whatever we can to take care of him. please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. my dad John Lambert is a hero(:
Dear JTL, I couldn’t agree more with you. When I saw neighbors saying such nice things about your dad and heard he had children I was wondering how you were all doing. I’m sure many officers in the area will be helping your family through this. I am a police officer too. Even though I am far off in Connecticut know that my thoughts and prayers are with your dad and your family during this. Everything will be OK. Take care
