Yesterday we brought you a bunch of video from a fire in Edmonton’s Sylvan Lake that occurred Tuesday afternoon. The flames took out four detached homes at the waterfront community. Two of the videos were posted on YouTube (then removed and reposted) by a young woman and man who didn’t have anything complimentary to say about the fire department (generating quite a few comments from readers).
What wasn’t initially available, but is now, were the two early clips shot by this couple. It starts with them seeing the fire while they were at the lake. The language is quite similar to what was on the other two videos. If you are offended by such language you might not want to view the videos.

First of all, for what it’s worth, Sylvan Lake is in Edmonton about as much as Culpeper, VA is in DC. It’s a town somewhat distant from Edmonton, although that is the largest nearby city.
Second: Fire conditions in Alberta right now, especially in and around the area where this fire was, are extreme almost to the point of being ludicrous. Although the fire weather forecast is delivered specifically for wildland fires, the conditions apply to structures as well, especially with wood shake roofs as are popular in Alberta. There is virtually no moisture in the province to speak of and (as can be heard on the video) the winds are frequently high to boot. Another community near Edmonton has been fighting a ~8400 acre wildfire for roughly two weeks.
Having said that, even as an Alberta firefighter, I’m not too worried about what these two think of my profession’s efforts on a fire. As I’m sure you and all your readers know, everyone loves to be an armchair critic. Not only that, but when the first thing you think of when seeing a structure fire is to race into the neighborhood and clog up both the street and the alley, it’s not a surprise there are no trucks on scene (besides the ambulance and police car seen in the first video, as well as the sirens heard as the two arrive). Also, in the community where I live and work we don’t have this problem, but if it appears that no one is responding to a fire, how about stopping recording video on your CELL PHONE and using the main function on it to call in to 9-1-1?
I had to laugh at the complaint that the construction crew – at least a dozen blocks away! – was doing nothing about the fire. What should they do, go pave the yard where the fire is?
i think the people who shot this video are total morons and dont have a clue what they are talking about. The fire dept did a great job and alot of people agree with that.
I am not offended by their language, however I am appalled by their ignorance and their stupidity.

Second the comments about them not calling it in themselves – and driving there to get in the way – yeah, and the one about the highway crew. All they do is reaffirm the proof of their own stupidity and uselessness. “Hey, we can get on You Tube” is obviously their life mission. Sigh.
