As I wrap up the TV career I have been conducting raids of the archive room at Channel 9 in an effort to get some of the old material on the web before I leave. This is a fire shot by the late Sheldon Levy in January, 1994. Sheldon was our overnight photographer and a member of the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department. His son David, a lawyer in Chicago and former firefighter, is a STATter911.com reader.
This fire was in the 2100 block of 14th Street, NW. Vito Maggiolo reminds me that the units had come from other fires with everything already wet and then freezing. Vito says members of Rescue Squad 2 were doing a primary search when they were forced to bail. All I remember is that it was a cold, cold winter.
Something else I found while cleaning out my desk, a February, 1993 picture of Sheldon Levy.

Great video!
Is this PGFD?? Most PG fireman are DC fireman. Am I Correct? Or is it most DC fireman are PG firemen.
Dave, I hate to say it but I never knew you were with TV. I just thought you were with the printed press or even radio and a true fire buff. OH HOW I WAS WRONG. Maybe I should have clicked on that “ABOUT DAVE STATTER” tab. That was truely a good report. Nothing negative, only positive, and everyone went home. We also have an “eyewitness news” at WSOC TV. Wish my news had you here to show the reports in the city all these years. Good luck with your future. Hope to see this site keep strong even if you do favor the DCFD(I like them also). Come on south and ride “The Shamrock Express”.
That wasn’t a close call, those were heroes from the squad. They can put a knock on a fire using a Halligan and can while blocking the stairs.
GREAT picture of Sheldon! When I was younger, my brother was a College Live in at RVFD Station 31, and my family became very close with Sheldon… I have many pictures of jobs from the night Sheldon took me to work with him in DC… It was an experience, and Sheldon was an unbelievable man!
Even though he could give you the silent treatment for a long time when he was mad at you, I do miss Sheldon a lot.
Dave,
I went to High School with Dave Levy and still converse with him via an occasional email. Just by chance he wasn’t checking out your page, I forwarded the pic to him. I may be dating myself, but he and I started our fire service careers 23 years ago when we both joined Cabin John. Knowing Dave as I do, I’m sure it pains him that he doesen’t answer the call anymore. I just bet he appreciates the mention in the article.
Thanks. Dave and I keep in touch. Great guy.
Thank you for keeping Sheldon’s memory alive. You brought back all the times the kids and I tagged along. Didn’t matter if we were on the way somewhere a fire was a fire (or an accident) anything that he could get close to. Still have all the stories framed and memorabilia in the house.
