Imagine having a golf outing so bad it brings out 150 firefighters and a chopper crew to see it for themselves. That’s what happened in Irvine, California on Saturday afternoon. It appears a golfer sparked a 12-acre brush fire at the Shady Canyon Golf Course in Irvine.
The golfer wasn’t a smoker. It appears his swing was the problem. He got into a little rough off the fairway. With his next swing the man struck a rock which apparently caused a spark.
I will leave you with the words of one wise, veteran West Coast fire chief who tweeted the following: “Shudda used a wood”.

Wonder if the PGA is going to add a penalty into their rule book after your shot from the rough starts a brush fire…From now on, each golf cart at Shady Canyon, will now be equipped with a 50 gal water tank, w/150′ of 1″ forestry hose.
As both a firefighter and a golfer, I have a hard time believing you could produce a spark that could ignite a brush fire like that. And if somehow you did, why not just stomp on the smoldering fire immediately to put it out?
I think there’s more to this story… a cigarette or horseplay or something…
Don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story. The AP bought it, so that’s my story and I am sticking to it. That said, I agree with you.

If your one of those hackers who thinks by swinging as hard as you can, thinking his ball will travel a country mile, I could see a spark off a good size rock…Plus, that area looks about as dry as it is around here….Maybe the guy did throw a Lucky Strike non filter down, but maybe his quick wit saved him…
