Early video: A rip-roaring garage fire in Minneapolis.

Lots of fire coming out of what appears to be a detached garage at 35th and Garfield  in South Minneapolis this afternoon. No injuries were reported and the fire did not spread to nearby homes or garages. The fire made local news due to the smoke being seen for miles around the city.

Did MFD take away the deck guns and large hand lines or something?

Hell, even us country hicks would have at least pulled a 2-1/2″ on that thing, probably a 3″ with a ground monitor if the deck gun couldn’t reach.

I can see sending one guy to protect the exposure with a handline as the initial action, while the rest of the crew* sets up for bigger water. Looks like that’s what they ended up doing.

    * Assuming Mr. Xinos allows the engine to have a crew.

Can someone explain to me why it took them so long to get water on the fire? I saw a backup lined pulled pretty early but it didn’t get put to use for quite some time unless it was out of the shot. At one point there were 6-7 guys standing around fumbling with their gear. Whats going on here?

Do firefighters not put water on the base of a fire anymore? Were they trying to put out the smoke?

3:55 in the first video, then 3:00 in the second, not to mention what occured before the first video began and finally a 2 1/2 on the fire. Why over 7 minutes, of video, before we get the wet stuff on the red stuff. Pull the deuce and a half and hit the fire.

BShift…I’m with ya on the water placement..maybe the lineman thought the seat of the fire was in the tree somewhere, then caught the garage on fire….Minus the driver and the lineman (at least they were doing something), the others put new meaning into playing left field with no glove…

From the sounds of the engine, and the fact it took so long to get 2nd water on it, my guess is there were some water supply problems.

There has to be more to this than we can see, not even the biggest hick station doing 3 calls a year in an old duece and a half tanker could be that slow !!

it was a damn garage fire. no exposure problems. an 1.5 and a water supply is more than sufficent to put this fire out. Grow a set and go in there and attack the seat. Everything will get better once the fire goes out. where i work we would have only needed one engine company for this, we still have firemen where i work

Now I see why polotician Clack is f&@!ing up the BCFD so bad this is what he thinks firefighting is. A 2 1/2 directed at the base of the fire could have knocked all but the hot spots faster than the guy with the second line can get his mask on. Water problems? The above could have been accomplished with the tank using proper techniques. Maybe the powers that be up their make them run with empty tanks to save money on fuel. PATHETIC!

WHERE’S THE BIG WATER? OUR PEOPLE ALWAYS GOT DRESSED BEFORE THEY GOT ON THE TRUCK (or engine), PUT THE ACCESSORIES ON WHILE ENROUTE THEN READY TO FIGHT THE FIRE WHEN THEY GOT THERE???

How about a 2 1/2! One man can operate it! The only thing I can think of is a small tank on the engine maybe 500 gallons. But 500 gallons from a well placed, well operated 2 1/2 could have knocked some fire down until positive water supply was established. As for the deck gun. Maybe access to the alley was an issue. Can’t really tell from the video. Bottom line is GPM’s combat the BTU’s!

I can see a salty officer pulling up to this saying, come on men, we have a garage off, lets get some water and combat the BTU’s…

That bright orange glow coming from the garage was the reason you were there. Put the fire out! Really! 2 guys on an exterior attack on the same 1 3/4″ hose line, Hell if we did that we would never put any fire out till it burns down far enough to put it out with one line. Oh, thats what just happened, HUH?! No wonder councilman and the powers that be want us to buy our own turnouts!

Pretty much agree w/ all the comments, took way too long, deck gun or 2 and a half w/ a blitz nozzle could have really knocked it down early. It was defensive to start w/ so why were they all jackin’ around getting their masks on? At least 2 guys could have got a big line going. I believe it was pulled at the end of part one.

Did they have to get so many up there before they could open a line (?) or maybe they had to look to see if this guy had paid his yearly subscription fee before they put water on it!

The first line is put into service to protect the exposures which is the right thing to do. It is only a garage, no real life hazard. MFD is going thru budget issues right now. They are shutting down a rescue company and recently shut down a ladder company and also talking about laying off 35 FF.
