Fireground audio: Mayday at Norwich, Connecticut house fire. Firefighter goes through floor & becomes trapped. Similar problem for two who try to make the rescue.

The fire was on Harland Place in Norwich, Connecticut just before 4:00 this morning. A mayday was called when one firefighter's leg became trapped after partially going though the floor. Two who tried to help also started going through the floor. Here are some details from WTNH-TV:

"Upon arrival, heavy smoke was showing. The occupants jumped out the 2nd floor window and were taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation," said Chief Timothy Jencks, Taftville Fire Department.

"We had what we call a mayday, one of the firefighters, his leg went through the floor, he was trapped," says Jencks.

A second fire fighter trying to help also went through the floor. They were helped out by the rapid response team.

More details from Karin Crompton at theday.com:

A fire fighter issued a mayday after his foot plunged through the floor up to his knee, said Jencks. Two other fire fighters held him up so he wouldn't fall through any farther, while several others rushed over to help.

A half dozen fire fighters worked to untangle wires that had dropped down from the sagging ceiling and to extricate the fire fighter from the damaged floor; the two who were holding him up also started to break through the floor, Jencks said.
