I am a little late on this despite being alerted to the video almost a week ago. It is self explanatory. This is the Union Hose Engine Company #2 in Sleepy Hollow, New York (Westchester County).

Pretty sure this accident occured almost 2 years ago. Since then Sleepy Hollow has built a bailout simulator to properly train their firefighters.

Always use a belay line when practicing bailouts to avoid this mishap…
Unfortunately, the bail-out kit that Johnny ordered online didn't include instruction in it's use. It did, however, contain the warning: "For use only by trained personnel."
Being so close to halloween, I pray that was a thief trying to get away with his costume.
This NOT a “drill”.!!
It’s just unattended children misbehaving.
No safety line, no training officer/mentor,
no safety ladder(s) and not even a mat at the “landing zone”
Disciplinary action, including Beach-Time, should be mandatory.
Don't forget the "genius" points for posting it on You-Tube to show everyone what a great operation you have.
Good example of what not to do.
SAD! This kid is lucky he's not a quadriplegic!
DEE DA DEE!!
We are such a smart breed of individuals….
You know, sometimes someone has to step up and big the "dad" and say no to some of this stupid shit.
The way that this evolution was conducted was inappropriate, but I worry more about the laughter and comments when their "brother" fell to the ground.
Well, if this is two years old, it was still a Dumb Move. Obviously their wasn't any thought as how the bail Out Manuver was supposed to go.
Hope the Firefighter doing this evolution wasn't hurt too bad. maybe his ego.
Falls into the category of, "If you're gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough". I would hope that the leadership of this FD took the appropriate corrective action against these children. And we wonder why the fire service is loosing some of the stature we enjoyed?!
Pretty much the same thing that happened to me except I was on a safety line (that didn't catch me) I was seriously injured and have been off work & duty for quite awhile. Even when proper procedures are folowed, trained instrutors are on site and all safety back-ups are in place bailouts can be very dangerous. This example though is just foolishness, as one poster said, lucky he wasn't really hurt in this shenanigan.
I'm confused. Was this bail out training, or hands on trauma practice for the paramedics?
Where should I start?
Where was the officer during all this? Or was the officer part of this. If so that's a big problem. Obviously there was no adult supervison. Don't get me wrong i'm all for drill and training… with that said anyone that has taken a instructor class will tell you safety is still the number 1 priority. Also we are doing this on the front ramp for the public to see. I almost have more of a problem with this than the fall, the other "firefighters" laughing and not even checking to see if he was ok. Last but not least we post this on the internet for all eyes to see.
It's great to see what the local government does with our tax dollars. This is a problem all over the country. Instead of investing in fancy uniforms for a bunch of kids and some half ass training (atleast they're practicing bail outs because if they actually run a call they will most likely use this technique to exit the structure) why don't we save the money for a group of people who will utilize these resources as Professionals.
