In this day and age, how dumb do you have to be to work in the smoke without your mask? Especially when the mask is hanging from your neck?? Why was the backup man up there without an SCBA in the first place??? Otherwise, it looked good to me. Maybe coulda worked on the roof a bit sooner, but maybe they were short of manpower. Radio sounded busy.
Fire 21, You're absolutly right. No airpack, no mask, on the roof over a fire that has burning for a while. Not the best idea in the world. The only time we as firefighters learn is unfortunatly when we lose someone or a firefighter gets hurt.
Wouldn't it have been easier to place the ladder, climb it and do a proper job of taking out the windows with an ax? And then why cut the roof? The second floor was already ventilated through the gable end windows. Couldn't ceilings be pulled from inside? Just asking.
no matter how you do it, horizontal ventilation is far quicker on peaked roof single family dwellings.
What the hell are they venting?
Damm it I hate it when my dangling scba mask gets in the way of an unecessary vent cut. obviously truck co. ops are not a regular part of South St. Louis Operations
all i can say is what a cluster. someone should fire the IC and Safety ( I assume they had one) for starters.
When entry was made, there was fire on the first floor but it was then discovered that it had communicated down from the 2nd floor. So, I agree when i was taking this video, i was questioning why ALL the first floor windows were broken out. The fire was mostly in the attic space above the 2nd floor. In my opinion, they should have placed the 125' aerial from H&L 4 to the roof and accomplished vertical ventilation that way.
Hell I think they did a wonderful job, everybody went home !! But then again I wasn't there so why WOULD I MAKE JUDGEMENT from my climate controlled keyboard? Man the F*&k up, some of you cowards wouldn't have the nads to even get on that peaked of a roof. Good job Lads you put the fire out and the town is safe. For the cowards, the do no wrongers: Firefighting is a DANGEROUS JOB, PERIOD.
…made more dangerous when dumb things are done.
You guys are such experts. Unbelievable. Probably never vented a roof. You probably think FDNY is crazy for not wearing their masks either. I'm pretty sure South St. Louis and FDNY know how to handle a fire more than any of us….. LOSERS!!
The only way i could see to make it safer is get out your halligan and dig the pick side into the roof for another foot hold, use the wrong side of your flat head axe while stradling the peak, or do it from the 125' aerial device! Mask or not these guys do it as safe as you can do it in an unstable environment! I was there and the only thing i saw wrong was the excessive breaking of windows on a floor not involved in fire and not above the fire floor! We have a very good track record with injuries(thank god) and when somebody does get hurt it is from INTERIOR firefighting! Just Another Fireman, thank you for adding your 2 cents! Everybody went home and the medics on the scene did not have to work!
@ just another fireman: wow! been on a fire lately? Better yet been to a LODD funeral lately? There is absolutely no excuse for their lack of safety that is clearly documented in this video. So they went home today Grats! what about in 6 months or a year from now G-d forbid they develop lung cancer, you gonna cheer then? Firefighting is a dangerous job, but there is no excuse in this day and age to risk your life by not wearing all of your PPE!
In regards to having the "nads" to get on that roof, why? from what i could tell the fire was knocked, venting had been accomplished horizontally. Other than some training on the fireground, and being macho what did it accomplish? I would suggest you go buy a book or take a truck co. ops class and learn what vertical ventilation is, its purpose, and the proper time and place for it.
I just wanna know why erryon'e dispatchers sound better than DC's.
For the "always wear SCBA and mask for roof ops crowd"… is there EVER a time when maybe WEARING your mask and SCBA is MORE DANGEROUS than not? I have been on plenty of fires where balance and loss of sight due to SCBA or facepiece issues actually CAUSED injuries that would have been AVOIDED if good common sense were used rather than using the "ALWAYS" mentality. Always or never are what is dangerous on a fireground. Good job guys.
Truckie, (?) Yes, I have to both of your questions " Better yet been to a LODD", ReallY? neither of those deaths were from a fire or from my house. As far as the book reading goes or truck co ops. yes, it's part of the class I teach twice a year. ….were they ventilating or were they doing overhaul ? Were you there ? I wasn't but I am sure as hell not going to dog out others to make myself look good, or do we do that now in this "brotherhood"? If so your voted off of this Island.
So let me take this to another level. In your vast learning of these books did you know that the cancer causing agents in your gear last way longer that he smell? How about that hood that's wrapped around your neck on every box? Yup, that has those same cancer causing carcinogen agents the gear has going right into your body ! Having said that do we wear our SCBA all they way to the firehouse until these items are washed/deemed clean? Hang them on the outside of the wagon on the way home? Bag and tag this soiled gear?
So here is your homework assingment from me: Reality vs. practicality. How are they realted to the fire service and how can they be troublesome ? No more than two pages please. Good luck it's due by noon tomorrow the 22nd of October.
just another fireman… wow you sir are a clown. I would be more than happy to tell you where to stick your uppity attitude and your homework assignment but that would not be appropriate here. Have a nice day and keep fighting fires from the outside like you probably already do.
Truckie,….. It's okay Bud, I have nice and thick skin. But I gotta tell you I expected a lot more from you with all this experience you seem to have from the books and classes you take, but it's okay there are always the other guys who have and will continue to take up your slack. You know, maybe that EMS job your considering holds the answer to those questions rattling in your mind.
I have to go now, the Safety Officer requires an afternoon nap from all of us to ensure we are properly rested for the big tent event. You have an awesome weekend and please park the chuck wagon close to the fireground.
Seeing as this has turned into a pissing match with a guy who probably doesnt even have a set of turnouts yet, your welcome to respond with some other stupid ass witticism. I wont bother to read or respond to it. Adios.
