Thanks to all who have posted here, and thanks to my good friend Dave for helping to spread the word of this sad event.  "Teddy," as he was affectionately known by those closest to him, was indeed a gentle giant with a heart of gold. He was a quiet guy but always ready with a sharp wit and a big smile, as you can see in his photo.  I had the good fortune to have worked alongside Teddy as a firefighter, to have gone into battle with him as a Lieutenant, and ultimately to have served him as his shift Deputy Chief.  He was humble, but brave and strong as an ox.  He was the guy you definitely wanted with you when you knew things could be dicey.  Firefighter Horace C. Pendergrass honorably served the citizens and visitors of Fairfax County, Virginia for 20+ years, and his actions were always consistent with the highest traditions of the fire service.  On October 22, 2011, we all lost a big piece of what makes us so good.  Thanks again for the expressions of condolence and support.  I will make sure that Dave has the info on memorial services as they become available.
