Early raw video: Initial attack on Salem, Oregon house fire.

This is from a fire Friday afternoon in Salem, Oregon. StatesmanJournal.com reports two residents were alseep and escaped from the home around 2:00 PM. The first three short videos were shot by Kevin Scarborough and provided to StatesmanJournal.com. The bottom video is from SalemReporter on YouTube. Below are more details from reporter Stacey Barchenger at StatesmanJournal.com:

The two-alarm fire caused substantial damage to a home at 520 Statesman St. NE, which is between Center Street NE and A Street NE. When Salem Fire Department crews first arrived they saw flames and heavy smoke coming from the structure, Battalion Chief Brian Hoaglin said. Firefighters started a transitional attack, meaning they put water on the outside of the home making it safe for them to go inside and search for people.

The fire spread through much of the two-story home that also has a basement. Firefighters climbed ladders to the roof where they ripped off shingles to make sure the wood would stop smoldering.

He (Salem Deputy FM Laird Case) said the fire may have started in a bedroom on the first floor of the home. The cause hadn't been determined Friday, but Case said the residents had a candle burning and were using a heater.

I wish I could understand why they would not enter the structure to put the fire out. We got a real good view around the structure and the only thing on fire was the contents. I'm hoping one day I will understand this mentality.

    Better question:
No one shown stretching hose from the Engine out front had SCBA!!??   The crew that showed up from the right had them, but none of the 3 guys we see from the first engine, responding to a house fire, with smoke in the sky, showed up wearing SCBA??

Well we can now add Salem to the long list of non-aggressive, non-interior firefighting depts in the country.  Pretty sad display of firefighting!

Maybe they're just following the USFA's recommendation and not going inside to fight "those" fires. After all, it's all disposable and just stuff.

why waste money buying fire trucks if your not going to go in and fight the fire. buy a bulldozier  it is much cheaper with the same results.

I got no issue with the intial attack from the outside….it has been proven to be highly effective…..BUT once you do that you have to go INSIDE to finish the job!

Use to live in Salem – never was impressed with the FD.  Can't say much about a department that staffs their trucks with 2 people (yep, that's it – one driver, one officer!) allows their firefighters to have braided, hanging out long ponytails, and their uniform pants are black Levis jeans…. No joke.

WTF ! sorry excuse of firefighting.  Way to long to stretch and charge the line, If your going to hit it from the burning side push in as you darken it down.  Man this is a paid department?  Two on a rig still no excuess come off the rig with SCBA ready to go, buy the time you stretch, darken it down,  the next due rig arrives and their firefighter should be ready to go and there is you two in and two out as well as going inside to get it.  This department could save a lot of money…. two rigs per job, and ROBM20's bull dozer no gear needed.  Put a rig on each side of the burning house, cover exposures with a deck gun so you don't get to close and let it burn to the ground.  Salem please watch some of the good attack videos on here, Chile, PG 12 Truck going to work… and the others.  Then start training training and more training…. line pulled and charged in 30 seconds or less…. you never know when you will be on Youtube. Strike da Box !

This is the new liberal way (oregon educated) to suppress fire. You see attack or fight is too harsh we must treat fire with respect and try not to upset it.

I agree with everyone here. Yes! T-Bone missed a "Big One" and he probably would have made better progress in its beginning.
