Above is Guy Zampatori video of a house fire yesterday on Dartmouth Avenue in Rochester, New York.
From an article by Victorie E. Freile at democratandchronicle.com:
The fire at 215 Dartmouth Avenue was called in about 12:45 p.m. by dozens of people in the neighborhood who saw smoke pouring from the roof of the three-story structure, said Fire Chief John Caufield.
Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting from the second floor, and upon entering the home saw that the fire had spread throughout the interior walls and ceilings of the house.
Firefighters began fighting the blaze inside, but changed tactics and left the home, fighting it instead from the outside, Caufield said.

Admitting to the fact that we only see 2 videos here, and we don't know what all was going on at any given moment…What's with all the FFs standing around, even taking time to shoot pictures? I admit, it was a picture moment…the flames looked cool! But there was work to do, eh?
The guy taking pictures was a Fire Investigator
Interesting, second floor front A/D clear, would had like too see how this ended
Put the friggin camera away, and help hump some hose buddy, jeez!
The fire service should reverse it's tactics. If the big guns are used first, then the little guns can wipe out whatever fire is still alive. We have to start thinking. We waste time trying to contain a well advanced fire only to burn it down anyway. Years ago at a bar, a friend of mine said; " Don't waste your time on buying drinks for the good looking women, just go ugly early and save the money". Think about it.
that last part…genius.
I hope the IC pulled them out due to a loss of water supply. If they had water in a line up inside the attic they could have knocked it down quickly. Once they went to a surround and drown the house was written off. The end result was the roof burned off the house and whatever wasn't burned was destroyed by thousands of gallons of water from the outside.
Agree with earlier posts….I am not anti – picture BUT seriously – what is that guy doing? He looks like an able body who should have a more important task than video taping the fire with his phone.
Just an fyi to those monday morning quarterbacking, the firefighter taking video is a fire investigator. Not saying everything was perfect, but what appears to be a simple attic fire wasn’t.
Lets look at the good:
1. Command Presence on the front lawn with Command Board and not screaming.
2. Plenty of Ladders to the building for FF Egress – On multiple sides
3. So they changed tactics…Nobody hurt or killed
4. Member in gear with camera phone..Investigator or Photographer..Get it out ot the News Station and make it a Postive event…Need more staffing??, Working Smoke Detectors or Not Working – Use it!!
The amount of fire that was present on their arrival may have proven that a parking lot was only a matter of time. We only see a section of the home and not the interior. It was into the fire for a period of time when the video was taken…who knows what happened earlier..
Good Work to Rochester FD…..
Fire in basement on arrival with fire showing from 2nd floor, balloon frame bldg. Burned out stairs. I agree, fire went out no FFs hurt. No bldg worth a life.
Mack Seagrave
Maybe he pulled them out because they were the only life hazard and the fire had control of the void spaces. Not a lot of room in those attics and easy to get cut off. Looks like the right decision when you look at risk/reward.
I'm just curious as to why Fireman M. Walker is phone camming or tweeting or whatever during and evacuation and working fire. Put a tool in your hand and look busy you fool!!!! Put that damn fire out.
DCFDAC3, already covered this FF Walker is a fire investigator, that is an issued camera he uses to document the fire scene. He’s doing his job. Geez read the comments and don’t jump to conclusions.
