From CBC News:

Several businesses have been left in ruins after a blaze engulfed a three-storey building in a Surrey strip mall early Thursday morning.

The extent of the damage is not yet known and the cause of the blaze is still being investigated. Firefighters spent hours battling the blaze at 83rd Avenue and Scott Road. The fire rapidly spread through the building, devastating several businesses, including restaurants and a gym.

From CTV News:

About 10 fire trucks, three rescue trucks and 46 firefighters responded to the blaze and had it under control by 7:30 a.m., though crews remained on scene targeting remaining hot spots.

No injuries have been reported in connection with the blaze, but a BC Hydro worker who is believed to have fallen down near the scene was loaded into an ambulance.

It must have been a road crew catching that hydrant. One turning it on and the others watching.

Maybe they wouldn't have spent "hours battling the blaze" if they kicked it in the ass. I know, limited view, short period of time, but between the guy almost swinging the axe into the safety glass (I've had girls hit me harder than that); 5 guys watching one dress a hydrant; 3 outstanding firefighterimpersonators; fog pattern on smoke; one impersonator hitting the rollover instead of the seat of the fire; I think it's pretty safe to assume how this scene went down. As opposed to the Detroit video. Or Mogadore. Or Stockton.
Looks to me like the results would have been the same whether the 46 impersonators showed up or not.

      Mark,

I like your new handle. But in the future I expect you to use it properly.

It is now an official credential. For example, it would be Chief Dave Statter, CFO, MS, BS, EFO, KIC. Here at STATter911.com World Headquarters, the only outlet authorized to credential keyboard incident commanders, we are very protective of how this designation is used. Please correct this matter in future postings.

Thanks for your comment and thanks for reading STATter911.com.

Trying to decide how to respond. Last time I apologized I was reprimanded by the guy who runs this blog. So maybe I'll just start attacking your manhood and any other vitriole I can think of that has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

10-4 Dave, I'll make the appropriate change, let me know if it isn't up to your standards.

100 points if anyone can figure out the last two.

Not sure and I wasnt there but before the fire started rolling out it looked like it might have been a gas fed fire.

Good points … BUT … let's NEVER FORGET the age old fire service rule: "BIG FIRE … BIG HOSE" 1 3/4" trash lines and crosslays with fog tips are useless at a fire in a commercial structure.

I wasn't there, don't know what all was going on, but…the only tactical thing I saw that made sense was bringing in the rest of the fire department, presumably to try to hold the fire to the block of origin.

This type of videos intrigues me.  We know that most firefighters aren't that inept, yet we see video after video where departments burn things down that have no business burning down.  It makes me conclude that, as mere onlookers, we don't have a clue as to what is really happening!  I don't know how else to explain it!!

This reasoning does make sense 21. Although I do wonder if they've been overtaken by the safety nazis. You know, no life hazard, so we'll keep it contained to the block of origin type thinking. I sure don't understand the massive amount of inaction taking place at this fire.

I blame the metric system . I was taught Gallons per minute put out fires . Not liters per minute

The later responding units should have just stopped at that Dennys, grabbed some booths and ordered some Grand Slams.  Probably wouldn't have had any further negative impact on the firefight than what we saw any they would have least gotten full bellies.
I think the only way they were going to keep it to the block of origin was if they had wide parking lots and cross streets.
That glass breaking effort with the axe is priceless.
How do you get the thought process to apply water to the fire rolling out the door, but not put any in the door on the seat of the fire??
Could've used a little ColdFire…would've put it all out "immediately".

sorry I can't figure KIC? But, mark remember it's a strip mall. I know we want to save property! But I don't want to have to tell a widow that her/his spouse got killed saving shoes, appliances, Etc. Lets make the risks are worth the rewards!

It doesn't take much risk to put heavy streams into the seat of the fire.   Some of the treats I've seen handed out at canteen units are worse for your health than that.
