The video above is from Brian Brown at ScanMD.org taken at a fire at the Fox Chase Apartments in Great Mills, Maryland (St. Mary's County) late Wednesday night. Click here for other Southern Maryland videos from Brian.
Approximately 45 Firefighters from Bay District, Hollywood and Valley Lee along with Lexington Park Rescue Squad responded to the Fox Chase Apartments in Great Mills in the 45900 block of Fox Chase Drive.
Crews arrived on scene and found nothing evident. Neighbors claimed to have heard an explosion and bystanders were yelling and pointing to a ground level apartment that a resident was trapped inside.
From Sylvia Carignan at The Washington Post:
The man was in a chair in his living room next to cigarettes and the breathing tube of a home medical oxygen unit, according to authorities. The oxygen unit itself was in a bedroom, a spokesman for the state fire marshal said.
Most of the fire was confined to the living room of the two-bedroom apartment. Officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire and the man’s identity.

The Gentlemen at about the 2 minute mark in Blue Jeans and Blue shirt that the crew has to step over to get inside is their Safety Officer, no gear on, smoke and lots of broken glass, (I did say Safety Officer right?) even the Police Officer has to come up and tap him on his shoulder to ask him to move out of the way. Nice aggressive line Stretch by the Boys and fairly quick entry made, unfortunate results but these Guys looked to be doing it right (Minus the help of the Safety Officer)
if your going to warn that some scenes may be disturbing to some viewers… atleast show something good…..
If Mr. Wow's comment is accurate, that safety officer should be carrying a 6' hook and a can and tagging along behind his lieutenant the next time he's spotted in a video… LOL
I dont usually post on here but WOW. Opening the fire apartment door on a ground floor before assuring evac of apartments above and not being ready to advance in before FE. Everyone standing around gearing up in the common stairwell after the apartment is forced is unacceptable.
Stop Monday morning this Fire….. I was there and you really have NO Clue. Go ride the Dumpster! " TWINKIE"
Shock,Gap - door would hsve been open in 1/2 the time. Stop kicking doors !!! Then it could have been secured with the bar while you mask up. Got the line in place, got the placed search. good job.
Let's talk aboutt he guy who is walking thru the glass door while turning on his bottle wiht no gloves on and no helment on. Look like the chief of this dept. needs to send his guys back to rookie school.
Reported person trapped in the fire room and you wanna hold up so we can evac the upper floors? Its an open stairwell, shelter in place and if you need to get em out by ground ladders? Some times…..alot of times a quick mule kick or two gets a door open…simple fact. This time it didnt they quickly went to option 2 and got in. A lot faster then 90% of the other departments we see on here. The lineman was coned up and ready to go on air. What are you talking about? The truck crew didnt mask up yet casue they were forcing the door. They did a great job. Awesome line deployment, aggressive operations….fast laddering. I dont see any reason to not give ths video a ton of praise. Awesome job
A little birdie told me that the reason they do an awesome job there is because of their Associates. From what the little bird said, their Associates do everything for their department. The Firemen don't do crap. Looks to me like the Associates did a wonderful job here. Let's give a round of applause to the Bay District Associates for a job well done.
Anonymous must be a yardbreathing/t-shirt fireman lol
Some people get upset knowing that someone is dead in the building, I figured I would put the warning up just to keep people from complaining that "It was to much" for them to handle. Hope you all enjoyed.
Little Birdie is a past fire chief trying to stir some S@#& as usual. The best thing the associates can do is disband! I challenge you to find a single associate in the video or scene pictures. Ask any fireman that was there that night, NO associates could be troubled to get out of bed to even bring us water. It was a fireman that was on a piece that had been placed in service, got back to the station, made a large cooler full of coffee and brought it to the scene in a utility. This is only the 6th working fire in our first due that the associates couldn't be troubled to bring rehab to.
Rehab is for quitters! Put a 3 gallon water cooler and some paper cups on each rig and be done with it! It's a fireground, not a luncheon.
Dick Diggler you had a small apartment fire with no extension … how much rehab do you need?
B ill,
While being on scene in the cold for over three hours providing equipment/lighting for the fire marshal it would have been nice to have a hot cup of coffee.
I’m sorry but judging by the immature comments on here it makes me think that all the bay district associates do is create problems for that department. This is a story about a fatal fire, tjherefore, I agree the leadership there should disband the associates and/or anyone partaking in the defacing of a commenting section about a life lost. As for the safety officer, The video shows all the proof that this officers main concern was the trapped victim inside, not what pants he was wearing. You southern marylanders are so quick to make rash comments on what someone else is doing. Get a hobby
