No date given on this house fire on Labelle off of Hamilton in Highland Park, Michigan. The firefighters are ordered to exit the home at 6:25 in the video.
Below is a picture of what the duplex looked like in 2009. But also tour the neighborhood in Google Maps to see how many other homes have vanished in that block in the three years since the pictures were taken.

Hi, who has an Idea which helmet cam was used in the video? I am currently looking to buy one for me. Any suggestions? Thanks. Detlef
Recently saw a new camera company FDCam.com but cant figure out how to buy from the website. Gonna send an email, they are half the price of firevideo.net

Wasn’t there a Detroit captain killed performing overhaul on an abandoned home a couple years ago?
Good to see that the HP boys have real gloves now, at least. A couple of them were burned pretty bad not too far back either, I think one lost all his fingers because they didn’t even have structural firefighting gloves.
Mark, your information is only half correct. Yes a DFD Firefighter was killed a few years ago doing over haul in a vacant.
Yes the HP guys have proper gear. We always have. 1 firefighter was burned last summer in a house fire. I was actually the other guy on the line with him. I did not get burned as I was wearing the proper gloves. That firefighter was not wearing the proper gloves. He did not lose his fingers. But he did end up with several health complications due to the burns that have made his injuries career ending. he now works for our dept answering phones and dispatching.
We all understand the dangers of entering a structure fire, Vacant or Occupied. This is a 12 min clip of a 3-4 hour fire. We do this at least a couple times a week brothers. Our decisions on scene are not ALWAYS the best (throw the first stone) but we felt on this fire that a quick aggressive initial attack was our best course of action. That was our choice and it worked out for the best. No one got hurt, and the fire eventually went out.
Thanks for the correction, HPZ. Also thankful that your partner is still able to function.
Initially, I must admit I thought it was stupid to go interior on this fire. It appeared that there was zero chance of survivability, which there was from the front. Seeing the last few minutes showing the overhaul, that was obviously the wrong impression.
I know you guys are as overworked and understaffed as Detroit, keep up the good work.
Thank you sir. stay low!
Remind me to take dramamine before watching these helmet cam videos.
It’s a shame jobs like that can’t be left to burn. I know, I know! Just sayin’.
Many jobs like this are left to burn…. with ineffectual tatics and the fire department there to orchestrate the whole thing.Risk vs. gain is always the order of the day. Our district would have decked gunned this one until plenty of help arrived. Then address primary search, overhaul etc..
Cappy – From my limited knowledge of Highland Park, this is the entire department. Basically a General Alarm.
Is Highland Park still based in a rented wharehouse?
Ted
Yes, we still run out of the warehouse. The city was given a 3 million dollar grant to build us a new station back on woodward but so far they have only cleared the space for it. Waiting on them to start building.
And yes, we run with 6 guys. Leaving us with 3-4 firefighters once you take drivers and OIC out. This day we had 3. It is slightly difficult for us to get Detroit in for mutual aid based on the fact that they are pretty well strapped down on a daily basis fighting there own fires. BUT they will help when we absolutely need it. We didnt feel as though we did. It takes alot for us to call and it has nothing to do with pride as I have read in other places that this video was posted. Also Hamtramck will help out but they have limited manpower as well. So this is it…unless we have multiple dwellings.
A deck gun with tank water through the front window to knock it down while you got the second line upstairs to the attic could have been an option too. With low manpower they kind of put all their guys in one spot. Definitely not surprised to see them pull out all from the first story to see fire blowing out of the 3rd story.
You are correct that is absolutely an option. Unfortunately there was plenty of fire on the first floor that the deck gun would not have been able to reach. And thankfully we did it the way we did because the second floor was compromised very soon after we made entry. All and all we see it as a win. Everyone went home. and we did EVERYTHING we could to put out the fire in a timely fashion preventing it from spreading to more homes.
