Video from initial fire at 1019 3rd Street
Earlier today we brought you West Plains Fire Department video of a house fire that occurred at 1019 3rd Street around 3:00 PM yesterday. That fire started in a closet and extended to the living area. Now, a new video from the department shows them returning to the same address around 6:00 this morning with the house engulfed in flames.
From an article by Ed Button at Ozark Area Network:
The home was uninhabitable after Wednesday’s damage. No injuries were reported in either fire.
West Plains Fire Chief Tim Bean says that the Missouri Fire Marshal is in town to investigate the original fire, and that the investigation is ongoing.

Uh-oh. Rekindle?
Nope. Not a re-kindle. This was arson. Both times.
I don’t know about this one. This looks like someone doesn’t like the neighbor on 1019 3rd St. Just saying? That much fire@ 6pm. Someone on that block had to see or smell a strong odor of smoke before it got rolling like that. I know rekindles happen but this one looks suspicious.
it was six am .
That’s interesting. This happened last night in Wake County, North Carolina. A local department went to a working house fire and were there for about 1.5 hours. They had just returned to the station when two more calls were received that the house was on fire again. When they arrived, the whole roof was burning.
My mistake. I meant 6am. The first fire look like a couple of rooms and contents. The 2nd, was well off when the 1st due arrived. I have to agree with FF327.
Well I think that nomatter what they end up calling it, this was most definitely an arson matter. Everything about this call was fishy from the get-go. And after a house is TOTALLY doused in water and there are no hot spots, there just cannot be a re-kindle. So I think if they call it a re-kindle, no one is going to believe it. The department was there for hours making sure there were no hot spots. Someone wanted this house to burn.
Really ??? KIC in charge here….protect the exposures….let it burn until you guys get A LOT of water on it…preferably with a guy with a hose with some TURNOUT on !!! Got kinda’ hot for him eventually !!!
I’m guessing it was cellulose insulation in the attic. It looks like its out and it isn’t. When it comes back it is well involved. Its been happening all over the country for many years but the industry has hidden what happens with older insulation after it degrades. Hmmmm wonder what happened to that video by the fiberglass industry that talked about it. I have heard of rekindles over two days later in a controlled condition.
Some interesting video to learn from. While I give excellent marks for pulling and placing several 1.5 or 1.75 lines, and yes with the FF without gear at least he got some flow on the effort, risky without PPE, but none the less gutsy all by himself and as a qualified ISO limited risk to himself.
This fire was pushing a lot of flame and heat on arrival, could place a couple of 2.5′s in service, with big fire=big water, although excellent usage of a deck gun or master stream off an apparatus, what a huge difference that made once it was in operation. Another Great lost art tactic that seems to be forgotten from my generation.
While we have made quantum leaps getting the pre-connects from 1.5 to 1.75 the last 10 or so years, we need to re-visit connecting with the 2 and halves again. They are believe it or not, not that difficult to place and operate as many like to believe, its like a lot of other things we do, just takes training and evolution to get comfortable with it.
Thank you West Plains for posting these, we all gleam learning on tactics and application from them. I use them to refine some of our Operational procedures and enhance our ability to provide the best service to our ratepayers, as well as highlight proper operation of fire responses. Stay Safe Crew.
Re-kindles happen to the biggest and best Departments in North America, if such was in fact the case no shame on the prior effort. As an Investigator I’ll go with intentional destruction, use of flamables or accelerants etc. to get it going. Either the owners or someone else do not like them, sad to see but a lot of this is going on across North America now a days.
