AP:

A man is heard yelling “Get out! Get out!” in 911 tapes released Tuesday from  the crash of a small experimental plane into a Florida grocery store that left  five people injured.

Emergency dispatch tapes captured the panic as  customers fled the store Monday evening. The plane plunged through the roof of a  Publix supermarket in DeLand, about 40 miles north of Orlando.

“Publix is  on fire!” a woman from inside the supermarket said in a 911 call. “The store is  on fire! OK. We got to go.”
Three customers were hurt, and two people  aboard the plane were hospitalized in Orlando. All of the injuries came from  burns, said Luke Schiada, an investigator for the National Transportation Safety  Board.

The amphibious Sea Wind 3000 plane encountered problems shortly  after taking off from the DeLand Municipal Airport, less than two miles from the  shopping center. Investigators weren’t sure where the plane was  heading.

The plane is made of composite material and was amateur-built in  2002. It seats four people but only two people from Illinois were aboard, said  Schiada, who didn’t identify them.

Fire consumed most of the plane, which  plunged through the roof and landed between two aisles in the middle of the  store. The plane didn’t have a black box but investigators may be able to use  the plane’s GPS system to learn more about what happened, Schiada said.

Boy, the audio is a great mix of calm versus panic and professionalism versus frustration. I sure hope one of the firefighters has a helmet cam so we can see inside the Publix!

Hi Dave. This call was dispatched as a second alarm assignment and Batt. 80 requested a 3rd upon arrival. DeLand FD, Volusia County Fire Services, Orange City FD, and Deltona FD all responded. It went to the equivalent of 6 alarms by the time all was said and done. So many units were commited to the incident, that at one point, Daytona Beach FD Engine 7 was sent to our (Volusia County ) Station 46, which is 20 some miles away for coverage. They were directed to a different station, but you can imagine the chaos. At the same time this was going on, the east side of our county was fighting a brush fire. There were no fire service injuries, and as of tonight, there were only 5 injuries. Pilot & Copilot, and 3 customers.

There are some pictures that the crews took inside the store, I will put them up on our locals Facebook page…Volusia County Firefighters….as soon as I get them. I saw them today, and wow! Isles 4-6 were involved in fire and you can see the hole in the roof.

To the guys on the call, How was the visibility inside I didn’t see much of anything coming out the eves or doors. It looks like most of the smoke went up through it’s own vent hole and were there any inside rescues that crews performed?
