This is why you wear full PPE at motor vehicle fires. PERIOD! Cuz there is no such thing as a “routine” vehicle fire.

Nice video. This is a great example of why we should never be complacent with wearing full PPE. Everybody went home from that call.

How many times do you get told to aim at the base of the flame and it was under the truck where the fuel was, and it should have been where you started.

Even when we heard them talk about a tank issue, did we see any serious effort to attempt to cool the tank??

It looks like at least one of the lines had some type of additive in it, but, somehow we didn’t see “immediate” extinguishment. Hmmm…

There is alot of labor going on at this scene. Multiple 1.75″ lines in play, and they are getting beat. Why not just blast it with the deck gun? It appears that water supply is adequate. Try a 2.5″ line? Try a blitzfire or similar device? We have been given the tools, let’s use them. It appears that foam is being used, and is appropriate. I’m not sure what the background sound is, or if it could be heard by the crews, but if it’s making a noise that you don’t recognize; get away from it. We still have problems using the right amount of water application based on the size of the fire, and the material that is on fire. “It’s only a vehicle fire theory” just went out the window. These things get people hurt. No such thing as routine. If you can knock it out in the first round, why fight the other rounds?

I’m not afraid to admit it, I’d probably need to change my shorts after that.

We had one of these a couple of cycles ago. The LPG tank was venting as well. Fortunately for us we were able to keep it cool in order to prevent this. Now I know what the end result would have been if we didn’t do that. I’m glad none of these brothers were injured. Good job with full PPE/SCBA. These are definitely a pain in the A@#.

And yet there are still those folks that say 2 guys dressed in drag fighting a vehicle fire is no big deal.

      I agree.

Unless you are wearing bunker gear at a fire, you are a bystander.

My 2 cents from about 100 miles from that fire.

    1st. While the water supply was good, probably for a “Working Structure Fire or threat of, their appears to be some;

    LACK of Situational Awareness.

The propane cylinder was venting and yet no additional hose stream was directed to cool it off, in coordination with the primary hose line, the one with Class-A Foam in it.

2nd. Walking in front of the bumper that has been heated up.
3rd. It took a few seconds to Come up to “Speed” as the hose stream, pushed the burning gasoline on top of the water/foam down the drive way and then down the gutter to get a Dry Chem extinguisher.
4th. Yes, everyone was wearing full PPE and no one got hurt.
But I think this is a “Learning Moment”.

What peculiar camera work. Is that a steady-cam in action? How’d they do that, Dave?

I also noticed that. Has to be a steadicam of some sort.

Probably just used the YouTube option to remove camera shake. I think it basically just crops the image to give you a steadier view.

Don’t straight stream the fuel! By doing so he initially pushes the fire right back onto the guys on the 2nd line (and also sets the bush on fire). If you missed it, watch the left side of the clip at 1:33.

And pushing the fire down the street towards the BRT never earns you brownie points with the Chief!
