WBAL-TV:

Fire officials said crews  were called to the 500 block of S. Broadway Street at about 1:40 p.m. Monday,  where they were met with heavy smoke and fire shooting through the roof of a  three-story vacant brick building.

“Back on Register Street,  it’s a pretty narrow street. It was hard to get apparatus in there. That’s where  we initially tried to attack the fire. We did surround it on all sides, but it  was really tough because the fire was in the middle of the block and there was  no way to get to it once we couldn’t go inside,” Baltimore City Fire Department  Chief James Clack said.

WJZ-TV:

Two firefighters are injured battling a five-alarm fire in the 500-block of S. Broadway Street in the Fells Point area of Baltimore.

Officials say intense heat and the threat of unknown combustible materials are fueling the fire. But hand lines, monitor and ladder pipe operations are underway.

WMAR-TV:

The fire started around 2 p.m. Monday at a vacant warehouse on South Regester  Street near Fleet Street.  Regester is one block from Broadway.

One firefighter was hurt.  Fire Department Spokesperson Kevin Cartwright  says the firefighter hurt his ankle and was taken to Johns Hopkins.

Good thing that Balto City is closing companies, because they neeveerrr have big fires anymore.

All 3 of the companies slated for closure in July were on this fire. Two of them responded on the ‘working fire’ assignment.

Isn’t that the way? Was last year or two years ago, that Milwuakee FD was talking about closing companies and the next day, they had a 6 ( I think ) alarm fire in a retirement home.

And did those 3 specific companies help mitigate this situation any quicker or more efficiently than if they were closed?? NO! The outcome would have been the same.

really? all 3 of those companies were on scene by the second alarm. so yea id say they played a pretty big role in containing the fire to the original building.

This is a big deal because there were no more units available to protect the rest of the city, according to a post from baltcityfire tweets.

as with other large fires in the city in recent months, they transferred volunteer companies in from as far as two counties away to cover some of their busiest areas..for such a large, busy fire department, seems like they are playing russian roullette at times
