I am spending the Father’s Day weekend at the beach in Delaware and plan to slide down to Ocean City, Maryland at the beginning of the week for the Maryland State Firemen’s Association Convention. Besides my usual aimless wandering, the one place I know I will be is at the presentation on Monday about the video Fire Is! at 2:00 in Room 217 at the Ocean City Convention Center. It’s called Beyond Stop, Drop & Roll and Sparky the Fire Dog. Fire Education for Middle Schoolers.
I know it isn’t as sexy as some of the fine suppression oriented classes you may be interested in, but trust me, learning about and using the video Fire Is! could help save lives in your community. My son was about eight-years-old when he first saw the video produced by legendary broadcaster Dr. Frank Field. Sam was only supposed to watch one of the 20-minute segments, but within two days insisted on seeing all five. While Sam was a little on the young side for this video, it had a big impact on him. Immediately, without any prompting from his parents, Sam decided he will now sleep with his bedroom door closed and has ever since. You don’t dare walk out of Sam’s room after saying goodnight and accidentally leave that door open. You will hear about it.
For those involved in educating our children about fire safety and prevention, you know how tough it is to get your message into schools and to then connect with the kids. Frank Field, with the help of the fire service, has made great progress in getting his video in front of school children in New Jersey. One of those helping spread the word is Captain Helge Nordtveit of the Cranford Fire Department, a fire and life safety educator since 1978. Captain Nordtveit will make the presentation on Monday filling in for Frank who is a little under the weather. Captain Nordtveit will show a method of providing fire and life safety education to 5th through 7th grade school children that involves their families.
Please plan to join us on Monday. I will be in the audience taking it all in and look forward to seeing you.
