Above is a video from RycheG’s channel on TouTube of an apartment fire on July 12 in the Houston area. The air horns are sounded at 3:11 in the clip. Here is some of the description with the video:

All companies of the Community Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to an apartment fire at the Vinings of West Oaks, on Gray Ridge near Greencrest. The fire broke out in the Alief district, just west of Houston, around 11:15am Thursday July 12, 2012.

KTRK-TV:

Residents in a west Harris County apartment complex had to get out of their apartments in a hurry, in the rain, after a fire broke out just before noon.

Firefighters say it looks like the fire started on the second floor and then moved up to the third floor and attic.  They tell us all the rain made their jobs much harder.  It took fire trucks much longer than usual to arrive at the scene and the wind made the fire spread faster.

Helmets protect your head, Gloves protect your hands, Raincoats are not turnout gear and 1 3/4″ lines are not for big water!

Quite a few of the handlines were being operated with the bales open only 1/2 way. Was there a reason why they didn’t want to flow the maximum GPM’s that their equipment is capable of?

Got love it when fellas think a 150 gpm hanline is going to put out that much fire….maybe when it reaches the basement. Also got like FF’s that wear their accountability tags on the back of their helmets, good place for them when the IC tries to keep track of people. I agree with Mike 1397, why do people post these horrible videos, not helping their cause of showing citizens that we can do our job.

Oh… and one last thing. I’m officially seasick from all the camera motion. You can’t capture everything and by trying to do so I quit the video half way through. Ugh…

You got to know when to hold em and when to fold em. The fire has ran the attic. Eat your pride and set up the aerial to knock down the bulk and mop up the rest with the 1 3/4″ later. Major collapse around the little stair way, what are they trying to do up there. Pissing on it. Later in the video did that crew have any tips on that hand line. It didn’t look like it. Houston is better than that. FTM-PTB

    Very strange video.

A couple shots show fire…um…..whatevers where they had no place being.

Then it transitions to a bunch of fire…um, well guys fighting fire from the ground in full TOG as well as breathing air. Then, it progresses to “fighting” the fire from the same areas with no helmets or gloves and then no SCBA. All as the building becomes more unstable.

I’m assuming the fire went out sooner or later based on a lack of fuel?

Also, using rain for an excuse for extended response times? Really? Has it never rained in this part of Texas before? Their website says 25 square miles. How long could their response time be unless this was part of a hurricane? (Which would have extinguished more fire in less time than they did)

Having said that, they do have a lot of nice, shiny, clean gear and helmets. Maybe they just received a grant for all new gear???????

I was present for this fire. You are seeing only cuts of video. Master streams were deployed by Tower 3 and Ladder 76. Hand lines were used to supplement. I love firefighters who purport to know everything after the fire. You were not there. There was no delay in response and fire was through the roof on arrival. We have electronic accountability and no longer use accountability tags. This was a joint effort by CVFD and HFD. Mike and Mark, you guys are jackasses. Pontificating from your laptop. Get back to work.
