There are some compelling pictures from a fire at 1322 Chatham Drive in Racine, Wisconsin that occurred yesterday afternoon. First neighbors tried to rescue 63-year-old Peter Lui, who was injured, off the balcony of his burning apartment. They were unsuccessful. Then it was up to firefighters to carry him down.
“They wanted him to jump, but he couldn’t move. He was just hugging the corner, trying to keep away from the flames until somebody could rescue him. People were hosing him off, trying to keep him cool,” Hansen said.
29-year-old Eddie Martinez was at the top of the ladder — the trapped man’s next door neighbor.
Victoria Saldana is Martinez’ cousin, and said Eddie wanted the man to climb down the ladder, but the man couldn’t because of a physical disability from a recent stroke.
Cara Spoto, The JournalTimes.com:
Racine firefighters eventually rescued Lui and transported him to Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints hospital, 3801 Spring St., but between that call and the arrival of fire trucks, neighbors joined Martinez and her husband in an effort to save the man’s life.

A neighbor from down the street grabbed a ladder and Edwardo Martinez climbed it in hopes of getting Lui, who is partially paralyzed, away from the fire.

Eddie Martinez is a hero in my book. Good thinking on the neighbors using the green lines to keep Mr Lui viable until rescue.
front end loader….one support holding that porch up…that porch would have been lowered down pretty quickly before I would have watched the man burn.
Great job by all.
Hindsight being 50/50…..
I think I would have put two ffs in the bucket of the front end loader, lifted’em up and had them take down the balcony railing on the A side. The resident could then step (assisted) or sit down and slide (ouch) into the bucket.
