We have two collapses to show you from a major fire that began Sunday night in downtown Amherst, Nova Scotia. The clip above is as demolition crews came in to take down what was left of the buildings that had burned, including a large apartment house. Listen as the crowd anticipates what’s going to happen when the free standing wall on Side D is given a little nudge.

The collapse in the video below (at 4:51) occurs after the collapse above, but may have happened a little more naturally with the mixture of fire and water.

And below is the same collapse from a different vantage point.

CBC News:

More than 40 people in Amherst, N.S. are homeless after a fire at their apartment complex on Sunday night.

Several buildings — including a Dooly’s pool hall and an Amherst police building —were affected by the fire, which began around 10 p.m. in a four-storey building in the town’s downtown.

An excavator arrived at the site Monday afternoon to knock down the building gutted by fire. Fire officials have the fire under control but remain on scene to extinguish any hot spots.

MetroNews.ca:

The building was engulfed by 3 a.m. with just a shell left in the morning. Attention was focused on saving the adjoining Black Block, but flames fanned by strong westerly winds caused it to get out of control on Monday afternoon.

The roof of a neighbouring building, that houses law offices and the Cumberland Early Intervention Program, was heavily damaged when a section of wall fell on it.

WTF?? Why are they knocking down the building before the investigation is complete? Obviously there is still fire to extinguish. Hope he has good insurance!!

Oops. Somebody’s got some splainin’ to do.
As for the investigation, in my town this is the point where our IC would have the investigator paged.

Pretty sure no investigator is going into the fire building with one freestanding wall.

Guess some of you have never seen this happen prior to an investigation because there is no safe way of entering the building?

Look at this place on Google Earth. The 2 buildings were less than 6 feet apart. Could have been worse, or better if they had taken their time pushing that wall.

Lot of wasted water in that second video. No wonder it collapsed.
