Video from  on YouTube of a tanker truck crash and fire around 9:30 AM Friday on Route 15 near Liberty Township (Tioga County), Pennsylvania.

Cheryl R. Clarke, SunGazette.com:

According to state police, Jeffrey D. Krout, 27, of Wellsboro, was traveling south in a fully loaded 2005 Peterbilt fuel tanker in the right lane, when he served across the left lane and onto the shoulder of the road.

The truck, which was carrying about 4,600 gallons of diesel fuel, then swerved back across both lanes of travel, left the roadway, traveled onto the right side berm and overturned.

Krout extricated himself from the vehicle just before it caught fire.

The Wellsboro Gazette:

Krout reportedly sustained a minor leg injury and he refused medical treatment. Krout will reportedly be charged with careless driving and rollover violations of the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code.

PennDOT members were diligent in not allowing anyone near the scene of the crash, including members of the media. By the time a Wellsboro Gazette reporter could get near the scene, the truck and burnt wreckage were being towed away.

“IC directs from the Command Post period.”

Maybe he was – that may have been an assistant chief, or even a mutual aid chief. I don’t carry two sets of gear. If I go out on a mutual aid incident, I’m still wearing my white hat, even though I may have been assigned a mundane task like water supply.

To those who don’t know the whole story, the fact that I’m on a hose line while wearing a white hat may LOOK totally wrong, but if that’s what the IC wants me to do, that’s what I’m going to be doing.

I should mention that I was not at that incident, by a large number of miles.

I recall a department that used to fight fires with only booster lines…….that former Chief works in a uniform shop now……anyone recall that department……so why the HE** would you pull a booster on a tanker truck fire??? Were you thinking that maybe that 65gpm was going to do anything? Do you commonly stretch the green line on a structure??? Come on people…..get with the program!!!

A booster line? Are you kidding me?? Half a set of PPE? Come on, dudes. The American fire service is better than that.
If you’re a white hat and you’re ordered on a hose line, and YOU HAVE ALL YOUR PPE DONNED, then fine. Otherwise, stay back where the coffee is being served. There is absolutely no excuse for this guy to be where he is. NONE!

At least you get it. Far too many CIK’s assume that the guy running around with the white hat simply has to be the IC, not doing his job.

While that could well be the truth, it doesn’t mean that it is.

The lack of PPE is inexcusable. The deployment of a booster line, if it was indeed for the purpose of preventing the spread of a ground cover fire, wasn’t a bad call.

But we all know that there is that inate urge to spray water on the fire, whether it makes a difference or not…

To Anonymous…..I’d say that someone who can’t even spell their words correctly….should not even waste their time trying to make a point here! It’s easy to come here and criticize, I’d really like to see what you could/would do in this situation.
