UPDATE – Junior firefighter burned after gasoline was used in training: A 16-year-old firefighter from Pennsylvania’s Jackson Township (Monroe County) has been released after spending five days in the hospital because of burns suffered in a training fire. A number of investigations are underway and the chief has confirmed gasoline was used to ignite a pile of brush. Here is our initial coverage and click here for the latest. Speaking of Detroit, union president demands action about safety after four firefighters hurt: There is some fallout over the injuries to four Detroit firefighters at a house explosion Thursday night (click here for the audio & our coverage). Union president Dan McNamara sent a letter to Mayor Dave Bing’s chief of staff with a very direct message of concern for the safety of the citizens and firefighters following budget cuts that are letting fires grow because of longer response times. McNamara asks in the letter, “When is this deadly experiment with the members of the Detroit Fire Fighters Association going to end?”. NFFF Memorial Weekend coming up: There are many ways you can honor the 85 firefighters whose names will be added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial on October 6 & 7. You can get your local place of worship or other civic organization to participate in Bells Across America for Fallen Firefighters, or ask the news organizations in your community to live stream the ceremonies, or sign the Online Remembrance banner. Former apparatus manufacturer who had deal to sell pumpers to Montgomery County, MD charged with theft: Glenn Usdin’s FireTruckBlog.com has the story of the criminal charges against David Moser the owner of the now closed Elite Fire Apparatus in Wisconsin. Moser is charged with stealing money from communities that had orders with his company and from suppliers. Some may recall that in October, 2007 we reported Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Services pulled out of a deal with Elite for 36 pumpers because of “unresolved business issues”. A series of really unfortunate events on an Australian highway leaves a firefighter and others injured: It all started when a wheel came off a boat trailer on the Bruce Highway. It sparked a fire along the highway that resulted in a number of crashes including one where a firefighter was hit by a truck. Here’s the story.

Willie & Rhett do South Dakota: The publishers of IronFiremen.com and FireCritic.com toured South Dakota recently in a fire engine raising money for some good causes. They didn’t invite me but this Mike Legeros photo shows they can’t leave home without me. According to sources in the know, the number one question for Rhett on the trip besides, “What is Dave Statter really like?” was, “Just how many 16-year-old lieutenants does the Roanoke Fire Department have?” .
