Coal Region Fire’s still pictures by Stephen Barrett

Video from  of a fire late Sunday night at the former China Inn at 1357 Bunting Street in the Village of Llewellyn in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Here’s part of the description with the video:

Crews found a heavy smoke coming from the second floor and the fire spreading through the rest of the building. Ladder trucks from Pottsville and Minersville were set up and an elevated master streams were used a number of times. Nearby fire hydrant has not been working properly the decision was made immediately to bring in a tanker task force to shuttle water. A number of refill and dump sites were set up near the fire scene. Due to collapse of ceilings firefighters were removed out of the structure a number of time and exterior hose lines were used.

Frank Andruscavage, RepublicanHerald.com:

Flames destroyed a former restaurant along Route 209 in Branch Township late Sunday night.

Firefighters from Llewellyn and surrounding areas were called at 11:50 p.m. for a structure fire at the former China Inn at 1357 Bunting St., Route 209, and found heavy smoke and flames inside the two-story building.

Llewellyn fire Chief Michael Pothering said flames were visible from the second floor front of the building and smoke was billowing from other parts of the building when crews arrived.

Fire burns backwards in Pennsylvania ya know, that’s why the Rookies get to wear the White Helmets. Here’s a link to a interview with a Career Fire Chief in Northeast Pennsylvania in which he explains how fire burns in his town. I kid you not.

He. Those chiefs have over thirty years as chiefs, their not just white helmet rookies. And over 75 years experience as firefighters. And your statements about a career chief, doesn’t really matter because the whole county is volunteer.

The Chief ruining the Chainsaw blade cutting a useless “Windoor”, in the collapse zone, has thirty years? Or is it the Chief wearing no SCBA and climbing a ground ladder on a active fire scene, also in the collapse zone, is it he that has thirty years. Maybe it’s the Chief taking a crew interior in an area that has already collapsed, and been evacuated once, is it he that has thirty years? Or is it the Chief that allowed this fire scene to be operated in a manner that has historically KILLED OUR FIREFIGHTERS in PENNSYLVANIA, is it he that has 30 years? I’m intimately familiar with this area of “Surekill County” as I refer to it, and have great disdain for it’s,or shall I say, lack of, SAFETY OPERATIONS. You guys will never learn,at least not in my lifetime. Nothing personal, but I hate Line of Duty Deaths, and,or,injuries.

Feel free to post some of the calls from your department so we can see the exact way it is supposed to be done. I am sure that since you are an instructor (which some of the officers/firefighters on this scene were) that there is absolutely not a thing any of us will find wrong with any incident that you haven been involved with. Be sure to give an explanation of why some of the decisions were made. We dont want to make blind accusations that anything was done wrong without knowing why the decision was made.

Also, please let me know what classes you will be instructing coming up. I sure dont want to miss them!

        Thanks

Schuylkill County has 37 line of duty deaths since 1809. FYI that’s 203 years (just so you didn’t sit there and try and subtract using your fingers and toes)… 2 LODD’s since 1981, in Schuylkill County, last being in the mid 90’s. Out of the 37 LODD’s most were probably health related considering there are members still running in their 60,70 maybe 80′s Driving Operating Apparatus and working as Fire Police on scene…

Did you know currently there are about 120 active fire companies in the county? Totaling somewhere around 10,000 active volunteers in Emergency Services.. This County has its own fire training academy with amazing instructors. Instructors which will kick your ass if you did something unsafe. Our fire fighters are taught to be Aggressive but safe.

Surekill County…Learn some facts dickwad.. Go back and stick your head in your essentials book and look up some more clever comebacks. Just like the rest of the people who play Monday Morning Quarterback’s on this website.

I DO KNOW THE FACTS, Don’t try to distort them by number crunching. I have assisted as an adjunct in this County Fire School, and have probably kicked your ass, that is, if you have taken any classes. Just FYI, I have flipped through an Essentials Of Firefighting book once or twice, and that is definitely not where I gain my knowledge, or the basis of my curriculum. I have gained my knowledge from the Men and Women who have been so patient to teach me what they have learned through their years of experience. I am not a fan of video quarterbacking, but there is no better evidence as to what is occurring in a specific time frame. It would have been easier to put 2 + 2 together, not using my fingers and thumbs, but it is obvious the verbal communication on this fireground is lacking, at best. only by virtue of the video.

You are probably one of the reasons many of our county firefighters prefer to go to fire schools outside Schuylkill County. Very unproffessional attitude. You disappoint me. Grow a set and post your name.
