Flames reaching a power line caused a firefighter in Reading, Pennsylvania on Thursday evening to make a sudden entrance into an open window and off the roof. The firefighter was uninjured.
Things got extremely tense as the fire hit live wires moments after the fire broke out in a vacant home on Schuylkill Avenue, near North Front Street, in Reading.
One firefighter had to jump from a roof through a second floor window of the home to avoid the sparks. Crews then scrambled to turn off the power.

I guess I don’t understand the tactics being used. I see two guys trying to chop the building down, but no effort to extinguish the fire until right at the end. I was always taught (and firmly believe) that if you put the fire out, most of your problems go away.
It was a little over 2 minutes worth of video. Don’t think crews were inside pulling ceilings and knocking the fire from the front while venting the roof was going on? Could be wrong, but seems like sound tactics to me.
Wow Fire21, that was a very deep meaning statement. “Put the fire out, most of your problems go away”, never thought of that before, thanks for enlightening us. I’m sure that thought never occurred to them. Brilliant! You should write a book.
If you only have a fire in a roof, open a vent hole and the engine Co can get to the seat of the fire. Rather than flood the unburned areas. If you’re still living in the “Put the wet stuff on the red stuff” era, quit the fire service.
Negative. We vent to clear the atmosphere in habitable areas. Fires IN the roof are ideal for an indirect, non-vented attack. Regardless, this roof was ventilated, and the FF was taking a break sitting on the window ledge. He should have gotten off the roof, and somebody should have been putting water on the fire.
What was he doing on the roof anyway.Looks like it was vented to me!
Obviously we aren’t seeing the full picture and many of us are quick to judge. The commanding officer must’ve saw conditions good enough to vent and he went for it. As on any scene, get a 360 and decide, hopefully this was done and the roof team was given the go.
If it wasn’t for those wires, I think he’d still be up there. The fire was venting. GET OFF.
I love seeing comments from people who weren’t there and are basing their comments from a short video clip. For the people who are making comments about getting off the roof, the roof is venting because he did it. I will put my dept against any dept in the country. For the low manning we have we do amazing work. We burn more than any city in the state with the exception of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. We sometimes do things differently than else where but we very the job done and done well. So before anyone wants to take shots at our guys, think twice. It could be you next time being critiqued by Monday morning quarterbacks. For those who defended the situation, thank .
His entrance through the window was quite impressive. Nice form! Looked like he was simply going off the high dive.
Cut and get off, no need to dick around up there! Otherwise, I would give him a 10 on bailout form.
