More video from fire
Video from Corey Welch (coreywelchvideo) of SNEFireNews.com of a fire around 10:30 last night in a large home converted to a rooming house on Walnut Street in East Providence, Rhode Island.
Firefighters arrived around 10:30pm to find heavy fire on the first and second floors. Flames quickly spread throughout the structure. Two occupants who were home at the time were able to escape unharmed while a third could not be located on scene.
During the interior attack, three firefighters were forced to exit through a third floor window after becoming trapped by heavy fire conditions. EPFD Ladder 1 was in place to serve as an evacuation route for those firefighters, who escaped unharmed. Incident command then ordered all remaining firefighters out of the building.

Good job by the IC. Glad all got out safely. I can remember fighting those type of fires even in PG county.
Good job getting the guys above and cut off out of the building. The thing I don’t understand is the phenomenon that always seems to occur after something like this happens.
Why the evacuation order and defensive attack. The guys did their job and went to the 3rd floor to search. They found an alternate means of egress – the potential of having firefighters trapped is over and you end up with a room or two on fire. It’s not the time to freak out, it’s time to put the fire out.
Pretty worrisome moments there for a bit. Nice work to have the truck set up there. We don’t have much balloon construction in my area, but there’s lots of “DIY Building Company” that leaves construction techniques with a lot to be desired!!
Rob. The fire is out. Occupants and Fire fighters are out and safe. Buildng is still standing. What’s not to understand? Don’t show your ignorance by arm chair quaterbacking.
Why are so many here so quick to jump on someone else’s case just because they don’t think like or do things like the rest of us? How come there are so few attempts to explain and so much name-calling? Why isn’t there more information sharing, rather than personal attacks?
Has anyone else seen this, or am I alone?
I agree completely.
I Agree Robert. Once you have everyone accounted for. Get back in and put it out. Don’t turn your back on your orignal goal.
To all,
this was a rapidly advancing fire, in a balloon-framed building, with a report of a person possibly still in the structure(hence the interior search). The building was operating as a group home with a maze like interior. Occupants tried to extinguish this fire before calling the FD.
The company searching the interior was cut off from the interior stairs and rescued over the aerial. Once it was determined that no life was in danger, the IC had all companies revert to an exterior defensive attack. Which is exactly the right call given the fire had taken control of the building.
It’s a dangerous profession we’re in and we will push the envelope to protect life but should never risk our lives for a building that is already lost.
I’m proud to have worked this fire with the men & women of the EPFD. Great job all..
EPFD ISO, could you please explain your department’s evacuation tones protocol. FDs in my area use three long blasts on the air horn. The horns and sirens in the video were confusing to me.
Hi Crowbar,
it’s our practice to use both sirens and airhorns to evacuate a building. Our members know when you hear sirens and airhorns whaling on the exterior of the building..it’s time to exit.
Plus the IC will have our Fire Alarm Dispatcher give the evacuation order and then conduct a roll call of all on-scene companies.
RIT ( minimum 4 members) is in place at all working fire and can utilize a pack-tracking system to located down/trapped FF’s..
Each Company carries an accountability tag system of all personnel on the truck.
Don’t know what else we can do for the safety of our member!! Thanks for asking..
EPFD is a solid and aggressive department with an excellent reputation in the area. These old multi families can hide a lot of fire and conditions can deteriorate quickly with no warning. If an interior attack was viable after evac it would’ve been done.
EPFD did the right thing. These structures get torn down. Why risk life for a wooden dumpster. Did everybody forget
( Everybody goes home ) Great job EP.
Hard to stay ahead of such a big balloon frame building with 3-man engines and 2-man ladders.
