Ever since the new site came on, I can’t read it. When I go to scroll down, it locks up my computer. I have to shut down the computer to get out. I’m on another computer now (at the station) and it is very “quirkey”. It will lock and then unlock and let me scroll down.

So, I wonder if there is a problem somewhere? I never had a problem w/ the old site.

    Hi Scott,

This is the first complaint I have received like this. I am on it a couple times a day from three or four different computers and a variety of Internet providers and I haven’t had this problem. Have you tried the other blogs on FireEMSBlogs.com and are you having a similar problem? I will pass it along to the technical types and see what they say.

I can’t read this site because the dark lettering doesn’t show up against the dark red background.

I have the same problem as Capt. Kelly…It’s very hard to read the black type on the red background. Thanks for the site, though, it has excellent info and news.

    Fire 21 & Capt Kelly,

If you are seeing it with a red background behind the type it isn’t loading properly with your computer browser. Check it on another computer. The blog itself (where the words are) is black and red typface on a white background. There is a red background that, if loading properly, should only be seen on the sides and top.

I have seen what you are talking about, when the computer is loading slowly the whole bacground may start red and it is unreadable.

Again check it on another computer and check the settings on your browser. Let me know. Thanks.

Tonight the Manassas City Council directed the City Manager to look into the feasibility of dis-banding the City’s new Fire and Rescue Department and merging all fire and rescue services with Prince William County. This is to be done before the City Council will take any further action on the proposed change to the city ordinance that is currently under debate.

Don’t miss out on this story Dave!

Hello Dave. Great site. I visit at least once a day. I was looking for the “Bored Firefighters In The Snow Video” on the web. I use videos like this when I instruct Officer classes. We discuss the stupidty, safety, what to do as an Officer, etc.

Anyways, I found this video from two years ago. It appears to be similiar to the deleated video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3kiW7YEK9A

Thought you might like it. Thanks again. Enjoy your snow! Stay safe. Henry

    Dave,

Re: DeKalb, GA death (1/24). Any chance of getting the tape of the 2nd 911 call(s). I’d like to know what info was transmitted. I’ve read (can’t remember where) that the caller (a neighbor) was told that the FFs were already on scene, and didn’t really arrive for another 15-20 minutes. If so, that would make it a real dispatch issue.

    Thanks.

Great coverage of the old Knickerbocker collapse…Further study of the Washington Post archives reveals how 3 C&P telephone operators were later given awards for their initiative in getting help from 1 lone caller; they in effect formed a pre-911 system and got as much help started onsite as possible. One 52 year-old DCFD chief was a hero there and was awarded a retirement for years of injuries that caught up with him. One relative of mine was killed there who was responsible for making D.C. the leader in sales of the new Dodge Brothers car per capita in the U.S. The firms name was Semmes-Kneessi, with one Semmes brother who was there that night and barely escaped. Howard Kneessi, V.P. of the firm was killed. E.B. Semmes and Howard Kneessi each married 1 of 2 sisters; their maiden name was Dodge – no relation to the Dodge Brothers car company which preceded Chrysler ownership.

Dave, just a quick note about your use of RIT in place of RIC as is described in NIMS and what we teach here at teh National Fire Academy. I realize that there are numerous FD’s that still use the term RIT, but NIMS does not recognize RIT, only RIC and I would hope that you would help try and change teh terminology so maybe at some point long after I retire probably, we will all be on the same page.

Thanks for all the hard work you do, we all apprecaite it.

Did Mont. Co. pay you or promise you something for that piece on Burtonsville? Who on earth couldn’t figure out that if you have to cite an incident from 2009 to make your case your full of crap? What a joke, cite an incident from 2009 and then slip the word allegations in to describe all the recent incidents. We all know if the allegations were true the word allegation wouldn’t be used. It’s tradition in the good old US of A to be innocent until proven guilty. So why did Bower’s take action prior to an investigation being concluded? I’m sure Montgomery is happy all the Chief’s and President resigned effective this past week. How can you blame them, with the County Exec looking for pay back over the ambulance billing it’s only a matter of time before they got crushed. My bet is Rescue 2 in Wheaton will be the next target on the list. I have never seen a witch hunt like Ike has going right now. When he cut all volunteer funds from the budget last week that pretty showed where his path is headed.

Just what is it that you think they could promise me? I didn’t do the current story on Burtonsville. When I left TV I stopped generating these news stories. I do link to the coverage of other news organizations. The older story from when I was a TV reporter was referenced in the current news coverage, so I added that story. What’s my sin? Should I keep the audience that reads my blog in the dark about this topic? I found iwhat happened interesting news so I shared it, as I have with thousands of other stories for almost four years in this forum. What’s your point?

    Dave;
Have you heard that the DC Fire Chief wants to re-brand the DC Fire Department.  Instead of DCFD he wants it to be known as the DC FEMS.  His reason is he wants EMS to be recognized. I don't think he realizes or realized that "FEMS" in french means "females".
If he goes through with this, and he has started just check the DC Fire Department website.  DC Firefighters will for ever be known throughout this countries fire services as the DC females.  You know fire fighters, if they can find away to rib another fire department they will and this chief is building in a good ribbing in his re-branding.
There is nothing wrong with DCFD; there is a lot of tradition behind that acronym.
The story was in this past Sundays Washington Post, Metro Section.

Hey Dave, No mention of the DCFEMS sorry excuse for a Fire Chief and his ‘firing’ ooops I mean banishment of Pete Piringer to an obscure office in the DC Gov bureaucracy. By using his influence with DC Gov’s mayor he was able to accomplish this travesty. It’s a shame that the current DCFEMS Chief runs the Fire Department like he is a medieval lord.

Oh yeah, he also just issued a mass demotion list, one of the first of its kind in the history of the DCFEMS (otherwise know as DCFD).

I sent it out on social media (FB & Twiiter). I have been so busy in Emmitsburg I have not had time to sit down and write something. Maybe today. Or it might be Monday. Interesting developments. I did give a quote to WTOP Radio on my thoughts about Pete’s work. It is in their article.

Thanks Dave, I wasn't bustin' chops, just thought that it was worth mentioning. I personally think it was wrong the way DCFEMS top man handled this. Pete definitely doesn't deserve this. But then most of those affected by the current DCFEMS leader's behavior and drastic policy shifts don't deserve what he is doing to this Department. Its like being in a sinking ship and knowing that just about everyone is going down with it.
