Audio: P.G. Beltway Crash involving Fire Engine
Posted courtesy AlertPage

UPDATE – Tweet from PGFD Chief Marc Bashoor at 7:15 AM EST:

3 FF’s at PG Trauma have been upgraded and MAY be released soon…more to follow. 4th is @ Union Memorial Baltimore critical but stable

WUSA9.com:

Four Prince George’s County Firefighters have been taken to a hospital after a violent crash on the Capital Beltway in Landover early Wednesday morning.

According to Maryland State Police, the collision involving a fire truck, a tractor trailer, and a Jeep occurred just before 3:00 a.m. on the Inner Loop of I-495 just south of Route 50. MSP confirms the crash has sent a total of 7 patients to local hospitals by ambulance and medevac.

Chief Alicia Francis, spokeswoman for Prince George’s County Fire and Rescue, is on the scene and confirms four of the seven patients are firefighters. One of them has been taken to Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, which specializes in severe limb injuries. He is said to be in critical condition. The conditions of the other three firefighters at PG Trauma have been upgraded and may be released soon, says the chief.

According to Chief Francis, the driver of the tractor trailer and two victims from the Jeep were taken to Medstar. Right now the severity of the civilians’ injuries are unknown.

Prince George’s County Fire Chief Marc Bashoor is also at the scene and tells WUSA*9 reporter Delia Goncalves the crash occurred when Fire Engine 828 out of West Lanham Hills was heading back home after responding to a call. Chief Bashoor says it appears the engine was struck by the tractor trailer from behind, sending both vehicles into the concrete barrier separating the Inner and Outer Loops. This initial collision sent wreckage and concrete debris into the northbound lanes of the Beltway, where a Jeep was also caught up in the crash.

Dream boat is a PR nightmare: A million dollar fireboat funded by federal grant money is at the center of the latest controversy involving the Union Fire Company and the town of Bensalem, Pennsylvania. Some of the firefighters blame jealousy on the part of the police department for this battle that has forced the fire department to change leadership three times in a little more than a year. Response failures are another problem facing the fire company.  Take the time to read this one.

Detroit accepts 1983 tower ladder

FireTruckBlog.com story on man trying to donate 1983 tower ladder

WJBK-TV reporter Charlie LeDuff is back on the case of the Detroit Fire Department and says it is still in bad shape with little hope on the horizon.

At the same time, LeDuff is asking what ever happened to the big green fire truck? That’s the 1983 tower ladder that was donated to the City of Detroit by a Michigan man. The fire department sort of reluctantly accepted it back in September of last year. LeDuff discovered, despite a claim by Commissioner Donald Austin that it could be up and running in a month, the department had no intention of using it. The rig is sitting in the shop.

But LeDuff has found someone who wants that truck rather desperately. He is the mayor of nearby Highland Park whose department is in even worse shape than the Detroit Fire Department. We have been showing you videos recently of the understaffed and under equipped Highland Park Fire Department (here & here).

Here’s more from LeDuff’s story:

“I would ask the mayor of Detroit, Mayor Bing, to bring that fire truck here to Highland Park because we definitely need it,” says Mayor Deandre Windom.  “Please, please, please, please, bring the fire truck here to Highland Park.”

The mayor says he called Detroit, but nobody would call him back.

Well, Mayor Bing didn’t return my call. Deputy Commissioner Fred Wheeler didn’t return my call. I’m starting to feel like the mayor of Highland Park.

For the love of god, free the big green fire truck for the sake of somebody’s children!

Reputation issue 1 – She’s paid very well for her abilities with a hose and she’s a firefighter too: Now that wiretapping is out for the British tabloids they just resort to going undercover. One “investigator” for The Sun contracted the services of a call girl named Jade who the paper reports is also a crew manager for the London Fire Brigade. The US Secret Service is hoping that President Obama will be planning a trip to see Prime Minister Cameron soon and that Jade will go for a fellow public safety officer discount. Read more.

Reputation issue 2 – Fire commissioner lets us know who the real ‘dumb-ass’ is: When you are a reporter you live for stories like this that are just so absurd and write themselves through the idiotic statements of people defending the indefensible. The Hartford Courant’s Steven Goode has launched into one of those with the unbelievable goings on at the Blue Hills Fire Department in Hartford, Connecticut. The fire commissioner says his assistant chief is a “dumb-ass”. He tries to prove it to us with logic that I imagine is not translating well for the people the department serves. You must read this to truly appreciate the depths of the stupidity involved here.

Win a three day conference pass to Firehouse Expo: Friday was STATter911.com’s fifth anniversary. A special thanks to Firegeezer.com (my favorite fire/EMS blog) for some very kind words. As a way of saying thank you to those who read this site I am giving away three 3-day conference passes to Firehouse Expo in Baltimore in July. To enter, just an email to dave@statter911.com telling me some things you like and things you don’t like about this site. Put “contest” in the subject of the email and have it in before this Thursday (May 10) at 6:00 PM EDT. We will draw three names out of those eligible. While I won’t post any of the comments with your name attached I do need to know who you are and your contact information. I will also be announcing the names of the winners (in other words you can’t be anonymous).

As the clock ticks for Baltimore Truck 10 firefighters rescue three kids: To the right is a still picture from a fire in the 800 block of West Lexington Street early Sunday morning. Three children were rescued from the building, one not breathing. The crew from Truck 10 grabbed two of them, according to union officials. The kids are alive in serious condition. Truck 10 is one of three fire companies on the chopping block scheduled to close. Here’s the story from the Baltimore Sun.

Also in Baltimore, hazmat data not readily available: The Baltimore Sun looks at a large fire in a Canton warehouse last month and the fire department’s inability to easily access data about the hazardous materials that were stored there and are stored at other city locations.

Selling the fire department out from under them: Firegeezer has the story of St. Joseph, Indiana Trustee Robert Uhrick who is attempting to dismantle the fire department so its services can be contracted out to another department.

Political leaders say lives of firefighters worth more than small savings: In West Milford, New Jersey a tight budget had political leaders looking at the option of cutting back a bit on firefighter physicals that would have saved $5000. The council members said they would rather spend the money. Here’s more.

Maybe this cat was on a two-bagger date: It really is an odd picture. A cat with a Doritos bag over its head as it sits on the top of a light pole in St. Petersburg, Florida. Cop shoots at & stabs two firefighters: A very strange incident just before dawn yesterday morning on the Eastern Shore of Virginia in Accomack County. Atlantic Volunteer Fire Company responded to a car into a tree along Route 13. Firefighters were helping the driver of the vehicle, described as off-duty Virginia Beach Police Department Officer Bradley Colas, when Colas became combative. Here's what WAVY-TV reports happened next - "Police say Colas began to fight with the firefighters and stabbed two of them during the altercation. The firefighters then fought back, striking Colas in the head, according to a state police spokeswoman. Police say Colas then pulled out a firearm and began shooting at the firefighters." A Virginia State trooper picked up Colas who had walked from the scene with gun in hand.

This man does not like the fire departments in and around Enfield, CT: There was lots of pre-arrival video when a fire in a sawdust building broke out last week. We posted much of it. I was told my blog can't be in the Fire Blog of the Year contest: That Fire Critter guy has his 30th annual Fire & EMS Blog of the Year underway. Rhett Fleitz started this contest back when he invented the fire service Internet while still in high school (oh, that's right, he still is in 11th grade). In a previous contest I threw my support to Bill Schumm (not that it helped any). I still believe Firegeezer is the best all-around fire AND EMS blog out there. It is coming up on its fifth anniversary very soon (and we are just a month or so behind Geezer). I am also partial to FireTruckBlog.com for apparatus news (my choice last year). This year either Rhett or Preston Fleitz (whichever one is taller, I can't keep them straight) told me because I am not a firefighter, STATter911.com is not considered a "Fire Blog" and can't be in the contest. I don't see that written in the official rules. Either way, make sure you nominate your favorite fire blog and when balloting begins, vote early and often. Here's the link.

Must see video of a fast moving fire: See the firefighter starting to run in the picture to the right? There is good reason. Firefighters in Australia had just pulled up on a box truck fire only to see the location of the fire suddenly move to the other side of a busy four lane road. Don't miss this video.

Courage for Kyle: The Barnegat Fire Company in New Jersey is now selling Courage for Kyle Bracelets. Kyle, the 11-year-old son of Firefighter Gene McGetrick, has been battling cancer for seven years. We first became aware of Kyle in December when there was an impromptu fire truck parade in front of his house. Firefighters from around the world have sent messages and patches to Kyle after Glenn Usdin's FireTruckBlog.com ran the story of the parade. If, like me, you listened to Kyle on the Internet radio show last week with Anthony Avillo and Jim Duffy, you probably recognized that these should be Courage for Us bracelets. Kyle is clearly not lacking in that department. Click here to learn how to buy one and to hear the interview in case you missed it.

A good lesson on handling a bad story: It is never good news when you learn a firefighter has been busted for drugs and money laundering and may have been doing some of the dirty work on the job. But it appears to me, based only on what I have seen and read about the story, the Albuquerque fire chief has made many of the right moves in dealing with this unfortunate set of circumstances. Furniture store & apartments burn in Syracuse, NY: The fire was Saturday afternoon. The uniform crisis in our Nation's Capital continues: Two more TV stories Friday about the battle between DC Fire & EMS Department Chief Kenneth Ellerbe and the troops over issues that have developed after what is being described as the fifth change in the policy for outerwear in the last year. The latest controversy boils down to whether the city can require firefighters to put identifying marks on jackets, seaters, sweatshorts and hats the department does not provide. Union president Ed Smith gets the airtime in the story from ABC7/WJLA-TV. In the other story, Chief Ellerbe, who had previously issued a statement saying he "wouldn't comment further on this one", does an interview with Fox 5/WTTG-TV reporter Paul Wagner. In the same story, Lt. Robert Alvarado again speaks out saying the chief is showing a "lack of leadership" and calls the latest order "unconscionable". Click here.

DC lieutenant's suit against TV station gets thrown out of court: The story is one that I thought, when it aired a year ago, was poorly done, had the wrong focus and tried to hold the wrong people accountable. The lieutenant featured had even stronger feelings and sued the TV news operation. A DC judge recently threw it out of court based on a fairly new law. Click here.

The parade passing by may be a record breaker: Glenn Usdin's FireTruckBlog.com has the story from Oklahoma on Friday of what may be the longest fire truck parade ever. They are sending the info to Guinness World Records. Click here.

Lessons in reputation mismanagement: The story of the wife who says she was left on a Maine roadside by the ambulance carrying her dead or dying husband continues to play out in the news. In fact, I think you can say the hospital that runs the ambulance service is helping keep this one alive by failing to follow some basic rules when confronted with bad news. The two most recent stories are here and here.

The message is loud and clear but was it a good idea?: A firefighter with a colorful employment record, who was recently fired in one Ohio town, has his termination letter signed by 13 of his colleagues. Some writing in our comments section are debating the merits of getting the troops involved in the separation in this manner. Read the details and the comments.

Singing the blues in Mesa: That's where country singer Lee Brice's tour bus caught fire. Watch the raw video and TV story.

Shift trading limited in Cleveland: After lots of criticism and bad publicity over firefighters living as far away as San Diego, limits have been put on shift trading for the Cleveland Fire Department. The amount of time firefighters can owe to each other or be owed will be 144 hours, or six, 24-hour shifts. Prior to this some firefighters were off for months at a time. Here's more.

High school cadet program for Prince George's County, MD: For two of the people in the picture at the right it was apparently their first time dragging a hose inside a burning building. Can you figure out which two it is? The picture was taken following a press conference on Friday announcing that PGFD will be working with the school system to start a high school cadet program. Okay, so from left to right it is Deputy Chief Ben Barksdale, Chief Marc Bashoor, School Superintendent William Hite and County Executive Rushern Baker. But that still really doesn't answer the question, does it?

Firefighters bury dog: In Wake Forest, North Carolina a house fire Friday night took the life of the family dog. A neighbor was so touched that the firefighters went above and beyond, and took care of burying the dog for the family, she alerted the local news media.  Thanks to Michael Greenham and Mike Legeros at Legeros Fire Blog for alerting me to the story.

Connecticut newsman and emergency services legend dies: Here is an interesting article from Connecticut's Naugatuck Valley about  the passing of 91-year-old Edward Cotter Jr. A founding member of Storm Ambulance, Cotter had also been a photographer and sports reporter with the former Evening Sentinel. When Cotter joined the paper at age 19 his father encouraged him to join the fire department which was next door to the newspaper's offices. Read more about the life of Edward Cotter Jr.  Thanks to Chris Schwartz at firstduefirephotos.com who sent us this and has more on Ed Cotter Jr on his site.

This is audio from a fire on Thursday at 181511A St. in South Edmonton, Alberta. It was reported around 2:40 PM and burned through the night. As an evacuation of the building was ordered, a crew, unable to exit from the top floor, called a mayday in an effort to get a ladder to their location.

In the end, much of the building burned to the ground. There is news video taken during defensive operations here and aftermath video below.

From the Vancouver Sun:

Firefighters had to fight the fire from outside the building after crews put in a mayday call while inside. Heavy smoke and steam generated by the cold temperatures can reduce firefighter’s visibility to zero, Lamb said.

Temperatures on Thursday evening were in the mid -20 C range with the wind chill. Equipment was damaged from ice buildup, and firefighters tend to tire more quickly in cold temperatures, Lamb said.

Crews were being rotated to prevent injuries and fatigue, (Deputy Chief John) Lamb said.

There were no injuries reported as of about 9 p.m. Thursday. At that time, the fire was still not under control.

A STATter911.com exclusive: In case you didn't see the fascinating story we had exclusively last night about a possible 911 abuse case in Arlington County, Virginia, you should take a look. We have shocking details on this one that you won't elsewhere. Here it is.

Coincidentally, a new blog by a veteran of fire and EMS was sent my way and it has some relevance to our exclusive report. Check it out here

The first annual STATtys are history: The story above somewhat explains the lame excuse for a year-end review I came up with. The name alone is enough to make you gag. But if you would like to see what I thought were the top fire and EMS videos on this site for 2011, click here.

The STATtys already has competition. Our regular Pennsylvania contributor Bill Rohrer has a compilaton of his most popular fire videos of 2011.

Lots of fire videos posted yesterday (and more scheduled today, so check back):

What's in a name: A new fire truck in Springfield, Massachusetts and Glenn Usdin's FireTruckBlog.com has the story behind its name.

Arrest made in Los Angeles arsons: We first told you yesterday morning about the surveillance video and the man brought in for questioning after another night of set fires keeping LAFD quite busy. The man in the video and the man arrested are one in the same and he has now been charged in connection with the more than 50 fires since Thursday. Click here for the latest and here and here for earlier coverage.

Los Angeles arsons & SM: As usual we were in awe of LAFD, on every platform with information on the tense arson situation. We featured that as part of a post yesterday. The Los Angeles Times has also made note of the role of social media and the arson investigation.

Rebuttal to Washington Post & DC chief: In case you missed it over the holiday weekend here's IAFF Local 36 president Ed Smith's response to Chief Kenneth Ellerbe's call for 12 hours shifts and the Post's support of the proposal. Also, Eric Lamar, in his Turn Out blog, takes a look at the DC situation and the common issue of political clout facing many unions where the majority of the firefighters live outside the jurisdiction. Check it out.

Seriously, did you expect any other fire blog to have this story first: If you put the words fire and brothel together, what comes to mind? I immediately think Firegeezer, because I know that's where I am going to find this story from Australia. But we are not yet through with typecasting poor Bill Schumm this morning. If I told you there was a story about a career firefighter who retired at age 75 after 51 years with the fire department in Kansas City, Missouri where do you think you'd find that one? Where else? Check out this remarkable story.

Major fire in West Virginia: Regular STATter911.com reader, West Virginia native and old friend Rob Shuff alerted us to the fire that destroyed three buildings in Beckley yesterday. Click here for details and pictures.

A rather unique prison break: In California, a prisoner/firefighter takes off in the fire engine. That's a lot easier than digging a tunnel with a spoon. Here's more.

Fire Law review 2011: Curt Varone has some important stories on the legal front from 2011 that we should all be aware of.

The Queen of Soul's future king is a firefighter: One of my favorite experiences in covering the Kennedy Center Honors for many years was getting a few moments to chat with Aretha Franklin three or four times. She would always stop and give us all the time we wanted. I noticed a gentlemen with her more than once but never knew his relationship to the Queen of Soul and I had no idea he was a firefighter. Word came out yesterday that Willie Wilkerson, a former Detroit firefighter (seen on the right in the 2009 WUSA-TV image from the Honors with Aretha and Bruce Springsteen) is engaged to Aretha Franklin. Glenn Usdin at FireTruckBlog.com/Command Fire Apparatus has a beautiful and sad story from Barnegat, New Jersey where doctors say 11-year-old Kyle McGetrick is in the final days of his difficult life. The son of Barnegat Fire Company Firefighter Gene McGetrick has dealt with cancer for the past seven years. Knowing Kyle's struggle is about to end, the firefighters from Barnegat decided to do a little parade by the McGetrick home on Wednesday night. But when Facebook and phone calls brought the word to the rest of the fire service in Ocean County, little just wouldn't do. There were about 100 vehicles in the parade.

After the story was posted on Glenn's site, a member of the Barnegat Fire Company contacted FireTruckBlog.com seeking fire department patches for Kyle. Click here to watch the story and learn where you can send your patch.
