Firefighter killed after truck plows through IL highway crash scene. Five other Hudson firefighters hurt & three emergency vehicles wrecked on I-39.

Authorities say a central Illinois firefighter was killed and 5 of his colleagues injured when a tractor-trailer hit three emergency vehicles.

The emergency responders were working at the scene of a previous freeway accident at the time. The name of the dead firefighter from the village of Hudson hasn’t been released.

McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling says that at about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, emergency responders were dispatched to a multiple-vehicle wreck on southbound Interstate 39 near Hudson.

An hour later, a southbound tractor-trailer hauling a load of automobiles lost control and hit 3 of the emergency vehicles belonging to the Hudson Community Fire Protection District and the Illinois State Police.

All of the injured were taken to a hospital in Normal.

McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling releases the following information concerning a motor vehicle fatality that occurred on the evening of Tuesday, March 5th 2013 in Hudson, IL. At approximately 2145 hours, MetCom received a 911 call in reference to a multiple vehicle incident on southbound I-39 near mile marker 6 in Hudson. Fire and police units were dispatched. Then at approximately 2245 hours, a southbound semi-tractor trailer carrying a load of automobiles lost control and struck three official first responder vehicles belonging to Hudson Community Fire Protection District (HCFPD) and the Illinois State Police (ISP). Six members of HCFPD were injured and transported to Advocate BroMenn Regional Medical Center in Normal. At 2238 hours on March 5th, a member of the Hudson Fire Department succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by Emergency Department Staff. 

“Today we lost a member of our Hudson family. We share in the sorrow felt by his loved ones, and we must not forget the valuable contributions be made to this community and the impact he has left on the Hudson Fire Department,” said Chief Dan Hite, Hudson Community Fire Protection District. “The Hudson Fire Department is a close-knit family, and the loss of one of our own affects us all. A tragedy of this type is felt by each and every member, but together we can make it through. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

An autopsy will be scheduled for Wednesday, March 6th. The identity of this firefighter will be released along with preliminary autopsy results later in the business day. Any questions regarding the death investigation may be directed to Coroner Beth Kimmerling. 

An Accident Reconstructionist from the Illinois State Police has been assigned to the incident and is working with the Coroner’s Office and Hudson Fire Department on the circumstances surrounding this crash.

Two firefighters from the Moraga-Orinda Fire District who have non-life threatening injuries were scheduled for surgery and a civilian is in critical condition after a vehicle ran into them on an Orinda, California highway on Sunday (Click here for press release from Moraga-Orinda Fire District).

Fire crews were investigating a series of rain-related crashes on Highway 24 near the Wilder Road exit when a, “A third car hit the side of our fire engine and then actually rolled onto the embankment and hit three of our firefighters and also the person we were taking the report from,” Chief Randy Bradley said. 

Fire Captain Michael Rattery, and firefighters Kelly Morris and Stephen Rogness were rushed to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek with non-life threatening injuries.

The rollover was actually the third crash along Highway 24. Firefighters first responded to a single vehicle accident and parked their fire truck to shield them from traffic. A second vehicle hit the fire truck. Then, as firefighters were talking to that driver, an SUV hit the fire truck, flipping over and skidding into several people standing on the side of the road.

Captain Donald Jones, a 31 year veteran of Arkansas’ Jacksonville Fire Department, was killed late last night when a man drove his vehicle into firefighters and police at a crash scene on Highway 161. Police are saying the actions of Bryce Allen were intentional. Firefighter Jason Bowmaster and a police officer are listed in critical condition.

KTHV-TV:

Jacksonville police say they now believe a driver intentionally sped up and hit and killed a firefighter and injured two other emergency personnel Monday night in Jacksonville.

The vehicle had left the roadway and struck a gas main. A Jacksonville police officer and two Jacksonville firefighters were working the scene when a van left the roadway and struck all three.

One firefighter, Capt. Donald Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. The other firefighter, Jason Bowmaster was med-flighted to a Little Rock hospital while the police officer was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Both are in critical condition at the time of this release.

KARK-TV:

Crews were called to the scene in the 8400 block of Highway 161 South around 11:00 Monday night after a car crashed, causing a gas main break. While emergency crews were clearing the accident, a van veered off the road, hitting three — two firefighters and a police officer.

Capt. Kenny Boyd with Jacksonville PD has identified the driver of the van that killed the firefighter as 47-year-old Bryce Allen of Jacksonville. He has been charged with 2nd degree murder and two counts of criminal intent to commit 2nd degree murder because he allegedly did not try to stop.

Boyd has also identified Allen as the son of Thelma Allen, the driver of the original car that crashed and caused the gas main break.

Statement from Jacksonville Fire Department Chief John Vanderhoof:

A Fire Chiefs worst nightmare is the loss of a Fellow Firefighter, that has been killed in the Line of Duty. Captain Donald Jones was killed in the Line of Duty while engaged in Firefighting activities on March 19,2012.

He started his career with the Jacksonville Fire Department on December 24, 1980. He served for 31 years of dedicated service with the Jacksonville Fire Department.

He will be missed by his family as well as his Firefighting Family. He will always be in our hearts and memories.

Please pray for his family, his brother firefighter and police officer that was injured at the same time, and his other fellow firefighters.

Above is police dash-cam video of a crash that injured two Goose Creek, South Carolina firefighters early Wednesday morning. One firefighter suffered a broken ankle and the other has a broken leg after being hit at the scene of an a single car accident on U.S. 176. Both firefighters were released from the hospital on Wednesday.

In the video, a police is telling the woman in the first crash that he is going to have to charge her when a car driven by Jessica Lanier plows through the scene. Lanier was charged with DUI and had bond set at $997.

According to an incident report, two firefighters wearing reflective fire gear were walking towards an emergency vehicle when the suspect's vehicle struck both of them. The force of the impact then flung both of the victims onto the left side of an emergency vehicle.

Fire vs. EMS in Cleveland over firefighters struck on I-480. Union says EMS delayed transport as first unit set up command.

IAFF Local 93 president Tom Lally told Cleveland’s Safety Committee that the first EMS transport unit to arrive after three firefighters were struck on I-480 on Sunday would not immediately take the most seriously injured firefighter to the hospital. Instead the ambulance crew set up a command post. Two-years-ago the city decided that EMS should have command at such incidents.

Excerpts from story by Paul Kiska, WEWS-TV:

Lally told the safety committee the change means that the first EMS ambulance on the scene of a multi-injury crash does not have to transport any victims, but instead takes over incident command and triage until a second EMS unit arrives.

Lally called the change a “flawed policy” and said there was a dispute between fire fighters telling EMS to transport the most seriously hurt fire fighter at the scene instead of waiting for the second ambulance.

A firefighter ended up driving another injured firefighter to the hospital.

The city has been talking for years about merging EMS and the fire department, which has created some disagreements over policy. Later on Wednesday, Safety Director Marty Flask asked the fire chief and the EMS director for an investigation into what happened on I-480 and see if a policy change is needed.

UPDATE from SConFire.com:  Both Firefighters were from Engine Company 4. The names of the pair have been released. Firefighter Chance Zobel passed away a short time ago. Firefighter Larry Irving has multiple injuries and is expected to survive.

SConFire.com and Firefighter Close Calls are reporting that one Columbia, South Carolina firefighter has been killed and one critically injured after being struck on I-20 today.

Initial details from WIS-TV:

Troopers say the firefighters were called to a brush fire in a median at 81 mile-marker around 2 PM Saturday afternoon.  The fire truck stopped on the inside lane.  Investigators say an Impala started to slow down as it approached the fire truck, when a van then struck the Impala.  Troopers say one of the vehicles then went into the median and hit 2 firefighters.  It’s not clear which vehicle hit the firefighters.

Case over wrecked Massachusetts ladder truck still making its way through court: It was more than a year ago that we told you about 22-year-old Firefighter Elias Martinez who had taken the rig belonging to the Provincetown Fire Department for a spin and wrecked it.
