Thick black smoke was coming from the single-story home at 732 S. McDowell Blvd. when firefighters arrived at about 2 p.m., Petaluma fire Battalion Chief Jeff Holden said.
The firefighter was burned when he opened the garage door, which released large amounts of pressurized smoke and gases and caused a fireball to burst from the front of the garage, Holden said.
A dog was rescued from a back bedroom, and two cats are believed to have escaped the blaze, Holden said.

Video above and immediately below by Billy McNeel (Billy McNeel) from this evening’s wind whipped building fire in Laurel, Maryland. Additional video below by Laurel PIO Pete Piringer (the headline of this story really should have been that Pete knows how to take video and upload to YouTube).
The fire was at the Laurel Oil and Heating Company. Just before 9:00 PM PGFD Chief Marc Bashoor tweeted the following:
On scene Laurel Fuel Co fire – no hazmat ACTUALLY involved. Under control
From PGFD Chief Spokesman Mark Brady:
Firefighters battled a fire at the Laurel Fuel Oil and Heating Company on Wednesday evening that caused significant damage to the business. At around 7:00 pm firefighter/medics were alerted to a building fire at 101 Main Street. Fire/EMS units arrived on the scene to find a 2-story building with offices on the first floor and an apartment on the second floor with an attached 100 X 75 garage with fire showing from the garage.
A “Task Force” was sounded bringing additional firefighters, support vehicles and incident commanders to the scene.
It was quickly determined that the garage housed three home heating oil delivery trucks. First arriving firefighters attempted an initial interior attack on the fire and then evacuated the building to regroup. The bulk of the fire was knocked down from the exterior using master stream devices before returning to an interior attack. It required about 45 minutes for 75 firefighters to knock down the fire. Firefighter/Medics from Prince George’s, Montgomery, Howard and Anne Arundel Counties operated on the fire ground.
One firefighter sustained a shoulder injury while battling the fire. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The cause of the fire is under investigation with a preliminary fire loss estimated at $750,000 for the building and it’s contents.
Clarence Williams, The Washington Post:
A large fire broke out in a garage at a Laurel oil and heating business Wednesday evening, forcing authorities to shut down parts of Route 1 in the city, officials said.
Firefighters responded to the Laurel Oil and Heating Company in the 100 block of Main Street about 7 p.m. and found heavy fire in a garage that houses fuel trucks, said Mark Brady, a Prince George’s County fire department spokesman.
The business was closed at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.
From City of Laurel spokesman Pete Piringer (description with Pete’s YouTube clips above & below):
Just before 7p on Wednesday, March 6, units from the Laurel VFD and Laurel Rescue Squad were dispatched to 101 Main St for a building fire. Approx 100 firefighters from PG, Montgomery, Anne Arundel & Howard Counties responded. There were no injuries. The fire involved a garage area attached to the Laurel Heating & Fuel Company. Damage is significant.

Somehow this video by hermy8 of a fire in De Pere, Wisconsin on August 31, 2012 slipped under the radar when it was posted. There is a lot of action going on even before the arrival of the fire department. It includes a small squad of police officers arriving. Two make their way to the second floor with a sledge hammer via an outside stairway on Side B apparently to check for victims. Their actions are out of view of the camera but by the sudden rush of smoke and their retreat down the stairs it appears they were successful in popping a door. News reports indicate this structure in the 600 block of West James is a garage with a workshop on the second floor.

Christmas comes early for the STATter911.com KICs (keyboared incident commanders). It’s been a long dry spell for them. I believe June was the last time we posted a fire video from Stockton, California. Our KICs, as many of you know first hand, are very tough critics. But based on a few videos we’ve posted, they have been giving high marks for the suppression activities of the Stockton Fire Department. Will the trend continue?
This video, from at least two different cameras, shows fire in the garage of a single-family home. The clip was posted to YouTube on Wednesday but I couldn’t find the date or exact location of the fire.
Here’s some of the description with the video posted by bereal2us:
An 1 ¾” liveline was pulled and attack was made from the interior door to the garage. Crews contained the fire to the garage, with minimal damage to the living area of the home. The video shows a liveline attacking the vehicle exposed by the fire, but was never used as an opposing hose stream.

Bill Rohrer at Newsworking shot a garage fire yaround 11:00 last night at 2108 Main Street in Whitehall, Pennsylvania (Lehigh County). Here’s some of what Bill wrote:
Engines 2, 12, 11 and Rescue 8 were on the ticket.
Captain Monahan arrived and transmitted a working fire in a 1-story single car garage.
West Catasauqua Engine 2 arrived and stretched a hand line for a fire on the roof of the structure. Engine 12 dropped a supply line at Allen and 1st Avenue and reversed it to a hydrant at Bridge Street and 1st Avenue.
Fullerton Engine 11 arrived 3rd due and supplied manpower. The fire was quickly extinguished and the car was pushed out of the garage. It was heavily damaged in the fire.
Bill is too kind and didn’t mention something on the video that I’m sure many will notice and likely a few will make comments about (image below). It happens.

FirefighterSpot.com spotted the video above from a two-alarm house fire on May 31 on North College Avenue in Fresno, California. Two clips are posted from 8989getsome’s channel on YouTube. Marc Benjamin at the Fresno Bee reports it was one of three fires in Fresno in the same hour:
At 8 p.m., they went to a two-alarm house fire at 8252 N. College Ave., near Woodward Park and found a garage fire extending into an attic and other parts of the house.
The fire is believed to have started near a water heater in the garage. Two adults and two children escaped without injuries. An all-terrain vehicle and a passenger vehicle were destroyed.
In a story yesterday, KSEE-TV’s Joe Ybarra reports there were seven structure fires in Fresno in a 48-hour period stretching thin resources even thinner. It’s a challenge for former Stafford County, Virginia Chief Rob Brown who has been on the job in Fresno for just three weeks:
The city is facing a $16 million dollar budget shortfall. Engines have been reduced to three man crews and stations are housing one company instead of two.
“With the loss of companies, we are having to send additional resources as back up sometimes as quick as it needs to be so we have to be very careful,” Chief Brown added.
That takes time, valuable time. Especially when homes and lives are on the line.
“Sustainability is what worries me…in the short term we can make this work,” Chief Brown said.

Raw video: Mayday after firefighter falls through floor at Schuykill Haven, PA structure fire.

Above is Coal Region Fire video of last night’s fire in Schuykill Haven, Pennsylvania that injured two firefighters. At 2:20 on the video a mayday is sounded for a firefighter who fell through the floor.
A four-alarm blaze Thursday night at a gun store in Schuylkill Haven injured two firefighters and destroyed the business in the center of town, according to Schuylkill County 9-1-1 dispatchers.
The fire was reported at 6 at the Schuylkill Gun Works, 20 W. Main St., and quickly escalated to four alarms as ammunition exploded in the building, dispatchers said.
Dozens of firefighters from Berks and Schuylkill counties battled the blaze for about 90 minutes before they controlled it.
Frank Andruscavage, Republican Herald.com:
The firefighter, who was not identified, was inside a building off Wilson Street Alley, to the rear of Schuylkill Gun Works at 22 W. Main St., when the floor gave way, prompting a “may day.”
The firefighter was quickly rescued by other volunteers and taken to an ambulance for treatment of non life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
Flames destroyed the garage attached to the gun shop along with a garage next to that which housed a privately owned woodworking shop, and two other garages.
