Two fires in the same house in East St. Louis, IL. The fires were about a year apart. The first fire features two probies. The video is from bobbybushae, our sponsor FireVideo.net’s YouTube channel. We have a video player in the right hand column of this site featuring these videos. Below is the description with the video:

This is a 2 part video. The 1st part is of an occupied 1 story house fire with smoke showing / fire venting from rear bedroom. We had 2 probationary firefighters with us that day and WOW was that fun. Pass devices going off and getting blasted in the face with an open nozzle was fun. But we ALL have to learn at the beginning! The probies made a quick stop and all was good. Until 1 year later the same house came in and it was going a little better this time, especially thru the attic. We were going to make the same push thru the front but the heat conditions were deteriorating by the second and being it was a vacant house now with fire thru the roof in some spots, we knocked it down from the outside and then went in. No one was injured but this was our 4th structure fire within our 24 hr shift….we were beat. The cameras used were the Fire Cam MINI HD and the Fire Cam 1080 Fire Helmet Cameras from www.firevideo.net

Video from Arlingtoncards.

Arlington Cardinal:

Mount Prospect police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:10 AM Monday to a report of a house fire just south of Central Road and Northwest Highway at 21 South Hi Lusi Avenue, Mount Prospect, IL.

Mount Prospect’s fire department battalion chief arrived on the scene and reported heavy smoke coming from the house. The battalion chief ordered a working fire response (Code 4).

The house was well-involved with fire by the time firefighters arrived. About 10 minutes after arriving on the scene, firefighters had to evacuate the house and stop interior firefighting operations because of dangerous fire conditions inside the house.

A fire department that has nothing but firefighters with a lot of heart, may soon have a lot less. Watch this video from East St. Louis, Illinois.

East St. Louis, Illinois is one of those fire departments that is extremely underfunded and understaffed. Like Highland Park, Michigan and some other departments we have featured, it responds and handles structure fires with a very small number of overworked and poorly equipped firefighters. As bad as it is, Rob Schield tells us it’s about to get a lot worse. Click here to watch this nicely produced video showing what Rob and his fellow firefighters face on the fireground and throughout the the city. Here’s some of what Rob wrote about the video:

With over 150 firefighters that used to protect this city, only 53 remain due to budget cuts. Unfortunately the East St. Louis fire department is facing laying off 22 more firefighters in May 2013 which is extremely dangerous.

Most fire departments respond up to 5 engines, 2 Chiefs and 15 firefighters to a house fire. Right now only 2 engines and 6 firefighters respond to a structure or house fire in East St. Louis EVERYDAY which is well below the number required by the NFPA. This is not to mention the other fire calls that come in. If layoffs occur, that number could fall to 3 firefighters and 1 engine which will be catastrophic.

AP:

Authorities say a central Illinois firefighter was killed and 5 of his colleagues injured when a tractor-trailer hit three emergency vehicles.

The emergency responders were working at the scene of a previous freeway accident at the time. The name of the dead firefighter from the village of Hudson hasn’t been released.

McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling says that at about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, emergency responders were dispatched to a multiple-vehicle wreck on southbound Interstate 39 near Hudson.

An hour later, a southbound tractor-trailer hauling a load of automobiles lost control and hit 3 of the emergency vehicles belonging to the Hudson Community Fire Protection District and the Illinois State Police.

All of the injured were taken to a hospital in Normal.

From Hudson Community Fire Protection District website:

McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling releases the following information concerning a motor vehicle fatality that occurred on the evening of Tuesday, March 5th 2013 in Hudson, IL. At approximately 2145 hours, MetCom received a 911 call in reference to a multiple vehicle incident on southbound I-39 near mile marker 6 in Hudson. Fire and police units were dispatched. Then at approximately 2245 hours, a southbound semi-tractor trailer carrying a load of automobiles lost control and struck three official first responder vehicles belonging to Hudson Community Fire Protection District (HCFPD) and the Illinois State Police (ISP). Six members of HCFPD were injured and transported to Advocate BroMenn Regional Medical Center in Normal. At 2238 hours on March 5th, a member of the Hudson Fire Department succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by Emergency Department Staff.

“Today we lost a member of our Hudson family. We share in the sorrow felt by his loved ones, and we must not forget the valuable contributions be made to this community and the impact he has left on the Hudson Fire Department,” said Chief Dan Hite, Hudson Community Fire Protection District. “The Hudson Fire Department is a close-knit family, and the loss of one of our own affects us all. A tragedy of this type is felt by each and every member, but together we can make it through. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

We ask that at this time that all media please allow our Department and families time to grieve. Any questions specific to the Hudson Fire Department can be directed to Chief Dan Hite at 309-824-2226 or Capt. Shane Hill, HFD Public Affairs Officer at 309-310-3788.

An autopsy will be scheduled for Wednesday, March 6th. The identity of this firefighter will be released along with preliminary autopsy results later in the business day. Any questions regarding the death investigation may be directed to Coroner Beth Kimmerling.

An Accident Reconstructionist from the Illinois State Police has been assigned to the incident and is working with the Coroner’s Office and Hudson Fire Department on the circumstances surrounding this crash.

Hudson Fire Department Facebook page post this morning:

It is with a heavy heart and great sadness I have to report the passing of one of our members. He was struck by a semi last night while at a accident scene. We also had 5 others firefighter’s treated and released from a local hospital. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, those injured and the rest of the department members as we move through this difficult time.  Thank all of you for your kind words and keep all of us especially the family in your prayers. Respectfully, Dan Hite, Fire Chief

Christina Chapman-Van Yperen, Morris Daily Herald:

The Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District fought an apartment fire Sunday night that was so extreme the chief said it was fortunate there were no fatalities.

At about 8:50 p.m., Morris fire was called by Morris police to 510 Twilight Drive to a fire in an apartment building. Police were evacuating the building, which was empty when the first fire engine arrived on scene, Fire Chief Tracey Steffes said Monday morning.

“I’m absolutely very surprised with the amount of fire and the type of conditions,” Steffes said. “We’re very lucky we did not have a fatality with the extreme fire conditions there last night.”

The man, 20-year-old Kenneth Brown, had run from police and jumped into the pond. Rather than excerpt some detailed articles about the incident, here are links to two articles that describe the concerns expressed by citizens and the responses from public safety officials.

Video from kingherodthegreat1 of an apartment fire today at 1412 Croxton Avenue, the Holiday Park Apartments in Bloomington, Illinois.

Bob Larson, centralillinoisproud.com:

Bloomington and Normal firefighters battled an apartment building fire Friday and managed to save a dog at 1412 Croxton Avenue. The first fire company arrived shortly after 11am and found fire coming through the roof and called for all off duty Bloomington firemen while Normal firemen also responded. A reported of a juvenile trapped inside one of the apartments proved unfounded but firemen did find a dog that was crated in one of the apartments and rescued the dog who had an emotional reunion with its owner. Windy conditions also made fighting the fire difficult.

Mary Ann Ford & Lenore Sobota, pantagraph.com:

A Bloomington firefighter was slightly injured by falling debris, but no residents were injured in the blaze, which was reported about 11:15 a.m., according to Bloomington Fire Capt. Brad McCollum.

Flames were already coming from the roof of the two-story building when the first 911 calls were received, McCollum said. The fire appears to have started in an upper-story apartment on the west end of the building.

One of the complaints by firefighters about the TV series “Chicago Fire” has been about a lack of realism. Well whatever the producers of the “Chicago Fire” is apparently real enough for TV news.

Huffington Post:

WGN Morning News anchors Larry Potash and Robin Baumgarten scrambled to report on helicopter footage of an apparent plane crash near 29th Street and Martin Luther King Drive around 8 a.m. Friday morning. A few minutes later, after considerable ad-libbing, they learned that the apparent wreckage had actually been staged for the NBC series “Chicago Fire.”

Look on the bright side, the producers can take the video of the real news coverage of the fake crash and incorporate it into the story.  That should add some realism.

We seem to have a theme going this weekend with vehicle fires. First it was an ambulance fire in Newark, New Jersey and then a tanker fire in Tioga County, Pennsylvania (which has prompted a full KIC alert).

This is just a plain old car fire. We don’t post many car fire videos, but the ones we do tend to prompt lively discussions. In fact, some of the liveliest. The topics that have generated the most input from our legion of KICs have been about PPE and use of reel lines on vehicle fires.

Running right behind those topics is the universal problem illustrated by this video from  on YouTube of a Ford Mustang fire Tuesday evening in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Getting under or through the hood was the challenge on this fire, something most everyone has dealt with at some point in their career. Discuss among yourselves.

Credit to thebravestonline.com for not ignoring this one like I originally did.

‘Is this your first fire?’ Upset owner yells at firefighters handling ’69 Camaro burning in trailer.

Quite a scene Saturday afternoon at Northwest Highway and Walnut Street in Arlington Heights, Illinois as distraught owners of a burning 1969 Chevy Camaro take out their frustrations on arriving firefighters. A man and a woman with the vehicle are heard and seen on the video shot by ArlingtonCardinal.com screaming at firefighters, ”Oh, my God!” and “Water!”. The woman then yells, “Is this your first fire?”.  The firefighters are off camera during this but are first seen around :40 into the video advancing a line to the fire.

The car was a show car that caught fire while being trailered home after being on display at a car show at a local high school.

ArlingtonCardinal.com:

A witness driving behind the trailer said that the owner noticed possible smoke, but thought it was road dust at first, somewhere between Vail Avenue and Walnut/Ridge Avenue on westbound Northwest Highway. When the driver smelled smoke, he stopped and saw heavier white smoke coming out of the trailer. The back door of the trailer was open when firefighters arrived. The vehicle became fully-involved with flames as firefighters connected to the hydrant and charged the line. The fire was extinguished within about five minutes.

Not one, but two helmet-cams operating on this fire. Thanks to FireVideo.net you get the split-screen view of this house fire in East St. Louis, Illinois. For those interested, these were shot with a pair of Fire Cam 1080s.

From the description with the video:

Crews found a story and a half wood frame involved with fire in the rear with extension to the attic and 2nd floor. The 2nd due engine was 9 minutes out. After a knock down outside, crews made an interior attack upstairs only to be called out for evacuation due to lack of water / hydrant problems and deteriorating fire conditions. Temperatures outside were 115 F heat index with 90% humidity. 2 FF’s were treated for heat related issues.
