This is helmet-cam video of a garage fire on Sunday afternoon in Mechanicsville, Maryland (St. Mary's County). Here are some details from Firefighter/EMT Ryan Raley on the Mechanicsville VFD website:

At 1716 hours, Engine Companies 2, 22, 5, 1, Charles 2, Truck 1, EMS Stations 29, and Charles 2 were alerted to 26616 Lawrence Adams Drive for the reported garage fire. Chief 2B(Bellevou) arrived first, moments after dispatch and advised he had a two story split level house, with an attached garage fully involved with extension into the basement and attic.

Engine 23(Lt. Colvin) arrived four minutes after dispatch, laying out the 4" LDH from the hydrant. The crew forced the front door, as no one was home, and advanced a 1.75" crosslay to the basement. Once in the basement, crews found the fire to be rolling out from the garage access and forced that door as well.

Firefighters extinguished the fire that was impeading on the basement then relocated the attack line to the second floor and extinguished the bulk of the fire on the second floor.

Engine 24(FF Copsey) arrived and assisted Engine 23 by advancing a second handline thus bringing the fire under control in ten minutes. Rescue Squad 2(Capt. Barnes) arrived completed searches and opened up.

With the fire under control, Command scaled the incident back and held the units from Station 2 and Engine 54 for short time.

One firefighter sustained a minor injury and was taken to St. Mary's Hospital.

From MNews.net:

Approximately 45 Firefighters from Bay District, Hollywood and Valley Lee along with Lexington Park Rescue Squad responded to the Fox Chase Apartments in Great Mills in the 45900 block of Fox Chase Drive.

Crews arrived on scene and found nothing evident. Neighbors claimed to have heard an explosion and bystanders were yelling and pointing to a ground level apartment that a resident was trapped inside.

From Sylvia Carignan at The Washington Post:

The man was in a chair in his living room next to cigarettes and the breathing tube of a home medical oxygen unit, according to authorities. The oxygen unit itself was in a bedroom, a spokesman for the state fire marshal said.

Most of the fire was confined to the living room of the two-bedroom apartment. Officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire and the man’s identity.

Cobb Island VFD

Funeral information

By Manny Fantis at WUSA9.com:

A well known volunteer firefighter from Cobb Island was among two men who drowned Saturday in the Wicomico River, officials said in a news release.

"Christopher Lee Kelly, 24 of Hughesville, Maryland jumped into the water from a pier and struggled to swim back to the pier. Several citizens including volunteer firefighter Christopher Michael Staley, 22, of Cobb Island, Maryland entered the water in an attempt to rescue Kelly. Both Kelly and Staley drowned," St. Mary's County police said.

The men were in the water near the pier at Wicomico Shores on the river, at around 6:15 p.m., officials said.

Monday, the Cobb Island Volunteer Fire Company was draped in black.  Staley is considered a hero for attempting to save the other man.  Former Chief Jimmy Jackson says the department considers it a death in the line of duty.  Staley was Cobb Island's most active young volunteer, credited with responding on more rescue calls than any other member in 2010.

Everyone in Cobb Island is in shock, not only because Staley was so well known, but because the drowning comes only 5 months after his older brother was killed on the job cutting trees.  Both men were landscape workers in addition be being members of the volunteer fire company.

The video above is from a house fire on Sunday just before 6:00 PM at 45,953 East Quincy Terrace in Town Creek, St. Mary’s County, Maryland. Responding on the call were the Bay District VFD, Avenue VFD and Hollywood VFD, along with EMS from Lexington Park and Hollywood.

Here are some details on the fire from an article by FF/EMT Jeff Evans posted on the Bay District VFD website

The initial alarm units marked on the air at dispatch and Engine 91 arrived on the scene at 1801 hours advising of a Single Story Residence with Smoke Showing and laid a 3″ supply line from the intersection of Town Creek Drive. Engine 32 arrived shortly after and picked up the supply line. The crew from Engine 91 stretched an attack line in the front door where they encountered moderate smoke and fire conditions which had extended into the attic. Engine 32′s crew pulled a backup line and assisted with extinguishment. Tower 9′s crew assisted the Engine Companies with opening up and starting the Primary Searches. Truck 3′s crew threw ground ladders and was assigned as the initial RIT team which they took a position on Side “A”. Engine 74 and Squad 7 arrived and Engine 74′s crew assisted the companies operating inside and Squad 7′s crew assumed the RIT function.

Truck Company 3′s crew then split up and cut two vent holes and conducted a secondary search of the residence. Solomon’s Engine 833 arrived and were given the manpower pool which they rotated crews inside and out assisting interior crews. As crews were being rotated in and out Command asked for an additional tanker for manpower bringing Engine 63 to the scene. Water Supply 5 arrived and was instructed to setup at the hydrant a short ways from the scene and tanker Shuttles were started. Engine 93 conducted tanker shuttles to units numerous times while the fire was being brought under control.

This video has now been removed by the person posting it.

I am assuming that the reason this was posted is solely for educational purposes and not to make fun of a Southern Maryland firefighter who had the misfortune of not only falling off of a ladder, but doing so in front of an operating video camera. The caption says the firefighter was not hurt.

While my assumption about the motivation for the posting of the video may be in error, my very dusty recollection from fire school is there is an important lesson to be learned from the clip. Something tells me this video will now be used by many to illustrate that lesson.
