Jon Reed, Al.com:

Firefighters were still hosing down hot spots and keeping an eye out for flames Friday night at the scene of a fire that destroyed a building and blanketed downtown Birmingham in smoke for much of the afternoon.

At 10 p.m., firefighters still had one truck in use to contain three hot spots in the pile of debris, a firefighter said.

The building had been the home of Action Printing and Supplies, among other businesses, but had been vacant for years. No injuries were reported.

Video from Craig Hendry (SarniaFireBuff) of a three-alarm fire on Thursday in Ontario’s Chatham-Kent. Details from Craig at CKR:

Fire crews responded to a reported structure fire at 445 Indian Creek Road just after 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon to discover thick, heavy, toxic smoke billowing from the house. Firefighters tried to knock down the fire quickly, but the fire was already in the walls of this balloon frame construction house. Fire traveled through the hollow walls of the structure spreading from the basement to the attic, which made it difficult to find and extinguish the blaze.

“At one point, we had to retreat,” said Montreal Fire Department fire chief Martin Farmer.

Once the fire was under control, firefighters performed an exhaustive search of the home.

They discovered someone unconscious in a room on the first floor toward the back of the house. Firefighters believe the blaze broke out on the first floor.

The video above shows the removal of Marshfield Fire Department Lt. Joseph Kalinowski following a structural collapse while fighting fire in a burning home on Side D of the original fire building on Central Avenue in Scituate, Massachusetts. It’s one of  a number of clips shot by neighbor at the fire early this morning and posted to YouTube (some of the videos shot before and after the one above are at the bottom of this post).

The initial reporting today indicated that Lt. Kalinowski was trapped in the rubble of 326 Central Avenue in the Humarock neighborhood where the fire was first reported at 1:34 AM. Additional reporting by Mary Jane Hanron at Gatehouse News Service has a follow-up interview with Marshfield Chief Kevin Robinson that provides new information and jibes with what we see in the video above:

All Marshfield apparatus were involved with attacking the fire in the central building and a home to the right.

At 2:34 a.m. Kalinowski was one of a crew of Scituate and Marshfield firefighters entering the second floor of the right side exposure building, according to Robinson. There was a significant structural failure, he said that knocked all four firefighters down and trapped Kalinowski under the burning debris. An immediate mayday report was given and the crews went to work to rescue the injured firefighter. Robinson said the rescue was completed at 2:46 a.m.

“It was only 11 minutes but it felt like a lifetime,” Robinson said Tuesday morning. By 3:20 a.m. was on a medflight to Mass General for additional evaluation and treatment.

In addition, Hanron reports Lt. Kalinowski has no respiratory injuries or apparent fractures, but did suffer burns to his back and neck.

This was the fire early Sunday morning at 510 61st Street in Brooklyn. Forty people were injured including at least eight firefighters. Four people were initially in critical condition. A man has been arrested accused of starting the fire. On the video above it sounds like there were two separate, quickly cleared maydays on the fireground. Firegeezer had initial coverage of the fire. Firefighter Spot has a FDNY press release about the arrest.

From WCBS-TV:

The fire department said 56-year-old Chiu Tsang was arrested on charges of arson after they reviewed video surveillance tapes of the fire.  Tsang was identified at the scene and made a number of incriminating admissions, according to the FDNY.

The blaze at the four-story building at 61st Street broke out around 5 a.m. Sunday. It took more than 140 firefighters over two hours to bring the flames under control.

Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department press release:

Firefighters from the Suitland area responded to a report of a fire at 3362 Curtis Drive at about 4:30 am. Fire/EMS units arrived to find heavy fire conditions on the terrace level, rear side of the building. Residents egress via the center stairwell were blocked by intense heat and thick smoke and they retreated to their balconies. Numerous rescues of those residents were made by firefighters from all floors using ground ladders.

The fire was well advanced by the time firefighters arrived and extended through the upper floors and eventually through the roof. The fire also extended into an attached apartment building at 3364 Curtis Drive. Personnel were forced to evacuate the building for safety reasons as conditions continued to rapidly deteriorate.

3 civilians are being treated at area hospitals. Paramedics transported an adult female that suffered a minor burn injury and an adult male that experienced difficulty breathing. An adult female was taken to a hospital by family members; she was experiencing difficulty breathing from smoke inhalation. Three firefighters also were transported to area hospitals; 2 suffering from minor burns and 1 for hypertension. It is expected that everyone transported will be treated and released today.

A 27-year-old-male resident, in what is believed to be the apartment of origin on the terrace level, was found deceased after the fire was extinguished.

A second and third alarm were sounded bringing about 100 firefighter and paramedics to the scene on-board 30 pieces of apparatus.

The majority of the fire was extinguished by 7:00 am. Firefighters re-entered the structure at that time to conduct secondary searches and complete extinguishment.

It is estimated that 24 families will be displaced. The Fire/EMS Departments Citizen Services Unit, Red Cross and Carriage Hill Apartment Complex Management will be providing assistance to those residents.

Because this fire involves a fatality and as a matter of standard procedure; the County Police Homicide Unit will join Fire Investigators until a cause and origin has been determined. The cause of the fire is under investigation and fire loss is still being tabulated. The identity of the deceased is being withheld to allow for family notification.

Three-alarm fire in Seattle. Video as restaurants burn in Greenwood neighborhood early this morning.

From the AP:

A three-alarm fire burned a building in Seattle’s Greenwood neighborhood housing three restaurants and a coffee shop.

Fire Department spokeswoman Dana Vander Houwen  says it was reported about 4 a.m. Friday. The roof partially collapsed, forcing firefighters to take defensive positions outside.

There were no injuries except for a firefighter who twisted an ankle.

Investigators are looking for the cause and estimating damages.

Vander Houwen says there was smoke and water damage to the next-door Taproot Theater, but no fire damage. She says firefighters also prevented the flames from spreading to a building on the other side with shops, apartments and an animal shelter with several cats.
