BLEVE from 3 angles

Click here to see three different views of Saturday’s BLEVE in Tacoma, WA. With a little practice I was able to run all three and get the timing down so you can see the various angles simultaneously (too much time on my hands).

The photo of the aftermatch if from thenewstribune.com. Click here for more pictures.

More details about the fire, explosions and injuries can be found here and here.

Below, I have compiled some BLEVE history from YouTube.

YouTube has an excerpt from a TLC documentary on explosions that looks a bit at BLEVEs.

From Taiwan, a tanker loaded with styrene.

A BLEVE done as part of testing in Berlin in 1999.

Above is the aftermath of a fire the same firm had in 2002.

President says words many of the survivors of fallen firefighters wanted to hear
Not long before I took these pictures on Sunday, President George W. Bush told those assembled at Emmitsburg:

“I want to tell you today that the Hometown Heroes Act will be fully implemented. This program will be administrated the way it was intended to be administrated. That’s the least we can do as we honor the families of those who have died in the line of service.”

Words that many of the families of fallen firefighters wanted to hear. It is particularly so for Athena Schwantes, seen in the pictures, who was denied benefits by the Department of Justice after her firefighter husband, Russell, died of heart attack on the job in Atlanta. More on the President’s remarks and coverage of the 26th annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service from Susan Nicol Kyle at Firehouse.com.

Read a transcipt of what the President said in Emmitsburg, here.

In the picture below, with DC Fire & EMS Chief Dennis Rubin, are Holly and Morgan Schwantes. The two girls led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.

George W. Bush is the only U.S. President who has visited the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in its entire 26-year history. This is President Bush’s second appearance at the Memorial Service. This time he stayed the entire service and greeted each family as their loved one’s name was called.

In 2001, President Bush’s trip to Emmitsburg was quite rushed. By lunch time we found out why the schedule was compressed. That afternoon, October 7, 2001, he announced that war had begun in Afghanistan.
One of those honored Sunday was Allan Roberts, a Baltimore City fighter killed last year. The Baltimore Sun has that story.

Post rides with DC’s Engine 11 looking at EMS in the Nation’s Capital
I read Elissa Silverman’s article in Sunday’s paper, but didn’t get the chance to link to it. It has a few dissenting views on the new EMS plan.

And finally … this is what you call aggressive, interior firefighting
