12-hour EMS shifts in DC: Nevermind

The DC Fire & EMS Department has changed course on its plan to have firefighters assigned to EMS units work 12-hour shifts instead of the current 24/72 rotation. When IAFF Local 36 was notified by department officials that the 12-hour shifts would begin on June 22, it created an uproar.

Many firefighters were concerned about doubling their commuting costs and trying to cover child care. The union threatened legal action if the plan was implemented.

Now the department and union officials have come up with a Memorandum of Understanding that keeps the 24-hour shift with an option of 12-hours for those who prefer the shift.
