Pondering the great mysteries of life or I sense another photo caption contest

While reading the story below this one on the Rochester, NY fire that sent a firefighter through a bathroom floor, I discovered something. It is a blog at DemocratandChronicle.com, a sister publication of STATter 911 (not that they would likely claim me), called While Rochester Slept.

It is written by overnight editor Chad Roberts, who roams the streets armed with a video camera. The picture above is from a frame of video in today’s blog entry. Even though he first thought it was a squirrel, Roberts now believes it is a dead rat embedded in the side of the house that attracted the attention of firefighters on the scene of a fire.

Here’s what Chad Roberts wrote about this incident:

One of the all-time great Python skits features John Cleese and Michael Palin in “The Dead Parrot Sketch.” If you have never seen it, and would like to, type in the words “dead parrot” on YouTube and have at it. It is fabulous.

Last night, at a fire in the area, we didn’t run into a dead parrot, but rather a dead squirrel. At least we think it was a squirrel. Matt from RNews, who went back to his office to carefully study videotape of the late mammal, now believes it could be, in fact, a rat.

What is most strange about the squirrel/rat is that it was stuck on the front of a house. Just stuck there, like an ornament.

Firefighters on the scene were as puzzled as we were. They looked at . . . then inspected it . . . then returned it to its perch on the house. After all, it is not THEIR squirrel/rat.

When I asked the chief on scene whether the squirrel/rat had made any comments, he said that it had not, because it appeared to have been deceased for a very long period of time.

So, here I am, the day after one of the most historic elections in our country’s history, at a time when fire departments across the country, including FDNY, are cutting back, and when we are all worried about making ends meet in this economic crisis, asking you to ponder the fate of this dead squirrel/rat.

On top of that, we urge you to take time out of your busy day and add your own captions to this picture in the comment section below. Remember, first prize, as always, is a filter to prevent STATter 911 from ever infiltrating your computer again with this silly dribble.
