Houston’s Captain Darin Unruh returns home after more than a month in the hospital

Friends of Captain Darin Unruh tell STATter 911 he is now recuperating at home with his wife Jill and their two children. The 39-year-old Houston Fire Department veteran was released from Memorial Hermann Hospital-The Texas Medical Center at 3:00 PM on Friday.

Captain Unruh had to be revived at the scene of a house fire on November 3 after being burned. By my calculations he spent 39-days in the hospital.

KHOU-TV wrote this about Captain Unruh’s 10-years on the department:

In 2001, he was honored with the Public Safety Telecommunicator Award for processing a call in which he helped a woman perform CPR on her child.

In 2002, Unruh was recognized for three separate incidents. He earned the Unit Meritorious Medal for helping rescue a man trapped in a 20-foot hole and two Unit Medals of Valor for helping save multiple citizens from an apartment fire and a blaze at a senior living center.
