Firegeezer first alerted us to this tire shredding facility fire in Cambridgeshire, England. According to Bill it is 200 tons of burning rubber. What really peaked my interest is the headline on a BBC article posted just an hour ago:

Smoke from fire ‘not dangerous’

Just to be sure you didn’t miss that, the next line says – Smoke from a tyre factory fire in Cambridgeshire is not dangerous, the fire service has said.

I don’t mean to be hypercritical here, but I am not sure the point they are trying to make with a headline and information like that. Does anyone reading this doubt that breathing that smoke is dangerous? Please let me know if you do and I will be glad to post your position.

Maybe what they are saying is you most likely won’t drop dead right away from inhaling that stuff. I think there might be a better way to phrase this. Maybe they hired someone from the tobacco industry of a few decades ago to do their PR.

Here is the information from the article that supports the headline:

Spokeswoman Emma Cousins said crews had left the site but expected the fire to burn for several days.

Scientist from Oxfordshire have carried out tests on the toxicity of the smoke and deemed it not dangerous, she added.

“Due to the compact nature of the tyres and the vast area in which they cover a decision has been made not to take any fire-fighting action,” said Ms Cousins.

She said the smoke was expected to go towards the Littleport and Ely areas.

Anyone experiencing problems with the smoke is advised to keep windows and doors closed and, if necessary, contact their GP or NHS Direct.
