This is a house fire in Haverstraw, New York early last Thursday morning. It occurred at 51 Main Street at a home under renovation after it burned about 18-months-ago. In the last video I ran from Haverstraw I asked to see more of the department’s 1969 Pirsch ladder. So here it it.
More on the fire in excerpts from an article by Jane Lerner at LoHud.com:
The home was vacant, but Haverstraw Fire Chief Peter Rugg said there was evidence that unauthorized people had been living in the two-family house.
When firefighters arrived, the attic was fully engulfed, with flames coming out the windows, he said.
Firefighters were worried that the blaze would spread to the home next door, which they sprayed with water. The adjoining home was not damaged.
Using a 2-inch hose line, firefighters advanced up the main stairs to fight the fire.
“We held the fire to the attic,” Rugg said.
They extinguished the blaze in under an hour, Rugg said. The first and second floors of the house had extensive water and smoke damage.
Firefighters had to make holes in the roof to vent the fire.
The same house was heavily damaged by fire in March 2008 that started in the kitchen, officials said.
It had been unoccupied while it was being renovated, Rugg said. The house was in the process of being sold.
Haverstraw firefighters were assisted by West Haverstraw Volunteer hose and the Congers Fire Department, which was on standby. Firefighters used a 100-foot ladder truck and two pumpers to fight the blaze.
The Cosgiff Hose Company Ladies Auxiliary was also on the scene to assist.
