Video from xXLKIIIx of a fire Monday afternoon in the 500 block of San Juan Circle in East Anchorage, Alaska.

KTVA-TV:

Ten-foot flames could be seen coming from the right corner apartment on the first floor and rapidly spread to the second floor. Explosions could also be heard, which neighbors say was from propane tanks and ammunition.

Canyan Linderman, who lives in the other apartment on the first floor, said he almost didn’t escape because he didn’t think what he heard were explosions. “I heard like popping, so I thought it was gun shots, so I didn’t want to just go out there. Ya know, risk my life or anything. Then a dude banged on the door and said there was a fire and to get out,” he said.

“It couldn’t of been more than 15 minutes after I came out the whole thing was darn near completely engulfed. And a couple of minutes later the fire department showed up,” said Allain.

By that time, firefighters with the Anchorage Fire Department (AFD) said the fire had consumed 75 percent of the building — something they say is very unusual. “Just in the middle of the day usually people will see smoke when it’s much smaller and call 911. I mean it’s a busy area here. It’s definitely something we will be looking at why it was able to grow so fast in the middle of the day,” said Captain Matt McSorely with AFD.
