Henrietta J. Burroughs, East Palo Alto today:
The fire was discovered at 2 a.m. by a resident in a neighboring house who called the Menlo Park Fire Department to report that the back of one of the houses was on fire.
According to Menlo Park Battalion Chief Mike Shaffer, the first house at 108 Lotus Way was already burning and the residents had escaped when firefighters arrived. Shaffer said the second house at 112 Lotus Way was just beginning to burn and the residents had not fully escaped.
None of the residents from the two houses was injured. But two firefighters were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. One of the firefighters has been released.
