Three children were struck by an SUV driven by New Brunswick Fire Director Robert Rawls as they crossed Livingston Avenue near Delevan Street, according to New Brunswick police.
All three juveniles, which were reported to be two 14-year-old girls and a six-year-old boy, sustained serious injuries and were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for treatment.
Toniann Antonelli, New Jersey 101.5:
The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, which is leading the investigation, has said that the white SUV was being driven by the New Brunswick Fire Director. It is still unknown if the SUV was a township-issued vehicle. The prosecutor’s office did not immediately return calls for comment.
ABC 7 spoke to local parents and reported that “the children were walking home from the school at the time, and there was no crossing guard at the intersection.”
Sergio Bichao, MyCentralJersey.com:
Officials identified the driver as city’s fire director, Robert Rawls. Police said he remained on the scene and was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
“We are still getting information on the incident,” city spokeswoman Jennifer Bradshaw said Tuesday evening. “[Mayor Jim Cahill] spoke with the families of the children at the hospital this afternoon and offered his support and that of the city. He also visited with the fire director, who only expressed interest in the well-being of the children. We hope all recover soon.”
